It was our 20th anniversary and we were looking forward to a night out. We ordered the California roll as an appetizer. The roll came out after quite a wait. My wife and I both took a bite at the same time and we both immediately nearly spat the food out. Something was definitely wrong with this roll. Rather than tasting a roll with fresh fish including King crab, salmon, and avocado topped with masago, as advertised-it tasted like roast beef with STRONG fresh onion. It was absolutely disgusting.
We got our server's attention and explained what was wrong. He seemed to have a hard time understanding what our complaint was. He reluctantly took it away and then a member of the kitchen came and explained that their "King crab mix" had raw LEEKS in it. Leeks are delicious when cooked and in a proper dish like a chowder or with potatoes, but why would you ever use them raw with a delicate and expensive fish like King crab?
After a replacement roll came (which was a just ok) followed by two seafood dishes accompanied but sauteed vegetables and french fries, (all which were very good) we quickly figured out (at least in theory) why the first roll had tasted so awful.
The crab mix had GONE BAD and we had each had eaten a decent size piece of sushi roll before we realized the mistake. Before we could really even finish our meal, the discomfort set in. First, my wife ran to the bathroom and spent a good amount of time in there before returning to to the table and then quickly making her way back to the restroom for a second, long session.
I followed soon after her and was in agony for an unholy amount of time until mercifully the worst GI pain I've experienced on any vacation I can remember passed. I guess I should thank the sushi chef, because this was a good reminder that prayer can get you though difficult and uncomfortable situations.
Anyways, now I am scared to eat at another restaurant in the DR. This was our first meal out on our vacation and it might be our last outside of our...
Read moreWe didn't know what to expect, as this was our first night in The Dominican Republic. We were absolutely amazed! Great food, wonderful service. We had pad Thai, calamari, and a calzone. All of them wonderful! We topped it off with a magic mushroom. Highly recommended! Great mix of food choices.
The service, though, that was most impressive. It got a bit windy and started sprinkling and the manager asked if we would like to be moved further up under the building. My wife needed to use the facilities and one of their staff literally walked her to and from, back to our table. Just fantastic service. Highly...
