Great Rooms, Food, Diving, Value and Service
We stayed for 10 nights to dive with their dive shop. We stayed in the newly built suites (Saipan). It has a full size fridge and a microwave in a good sized kitchen, and a toaster, a mixer, a small rice cooker, an electric kettle, along with utensils and dishes. Great AC in BR and living area. Decent shower in a decent sized bathroom, no bum gun but OK TP. All the clean water you can drink. We had a small balcony off the bedroom, with sea views. We would stay here again.
The large TV has several English language channels including BBC news, DW, Algazira, CNN, and a few other. Each guest is provided with a single wifi password that provides you with 1 GB of data regardless of length of stay (as far as we could tell). Additional access is available for $5/GB. Speed was adequate and what you would expect in Chuuk.
We met Bill (the owner) nearly every day. He was nice, informative and jovial. We asked so he pointed us to the nearest supermarket (left at the road, walk ~50 yards then right at the bank, walk another 50 yards). We also took a day tour with them (get Bruce) for $45pp. It was interesting. Roads were very rough. Wear long pants and sneakers.
Tarant was our Dive Master at Truk Lagoon Dive Center and he is great, as are the rest of the team. He is a bundle of energy and information. He and his team made sure that we had the right NX mix for each wreck. He is a Tec diver and he made sure to take us only to the wrecks that were appropriate for us non Tec divers, ensuring that we did not have to deco. He showed us a great time, safely. He is caring, attentive, and asks what you want to see, and then delivers, within safety limits. He is an underwater photographer so he knows the best shots and will take you to them and tell you about them, if you ask him. We would love to dive with him again. 10 days (20 dives) was just long enough for us non Tec divers to see everything we could, once. There were a few I would have liked to have seen again, but we ran out of time (we skipped a day and a half of diving). They will do tri mix. Teno is the mixologist! They also have 100 liter tanks. They have decent quality rental equipment. They provide you with a full size private locker/change room right by the rinse tanks. You analyze your gas in the morning and afternoon. Attach your BCD in the morning and they take care of the rest. You back roll into the water and can even hand your BCD and weights to them before climbing back on. Kento (?) brought us our tank+BCD before each dive and helped us into it. He made sure our air was on and took care of everything else, including switching tanks between dives. You can charge diving to the room and get hotel charges miles (no Amex and no extra charge for CC). Great service deserving of a great tip.
Restaurant was reasonable and the food was very good. Bump Head Parrot Fish tastes surprisingly good :( You can charge restaurant and bakery to the room (but not the tip, which is cash only). Bakery is really good.
People of Chuuk are very nice...
Read moreDive shop almost ruined our trip. Completely incompetent. We booked with them over a month before arrival. Two days of diving and they even agreed sites we would be taken to. On the day we arrived we thought we'd wander in to check the arrangements for our booking, due to start the next day. The guy in the shop just looked at us strangely and said he had no idea what we were talking about.|He phoned the manager who had arranged it, she refused to speak to us but said the dive guide was going to a funeral. Appreciate that the guide might be in mourning and understand a cancellation even but the dive centre hadn't bothered communicating with us at all. The manager told us, via the shop guy, to email her. We did, she never responded. We had taken 6 flights to get there, spent thousands and she couldn't be bothered to email us with an apology or try to help us to find and alternative!!|Later we were told by a local that the place used to work well, but the younger sister (who took our booking) had taken over management and couldn't actually manage. Lots of people were complaining and he told us that the dive shop had been out of action for a long time.||LUCKILY we got a taxi down to Blue Lagoon Dive Shop and did 6 incredible dives with them over the next 2 days. ||Avoid Truk stop dive or you could face a completely...
Read moreWe’ve been here twice and it’s a great family business. I can’t speak highly enough about James and Corky, who run the dive shop. Whatever you want, they will accommodate, which includes driving you around the island to other restaurants or taking you spear fishing. They are patient and fun, they take the time to explain every dive before you leave on the boat. The dive guides, boat drivers, gas mixers, etc. are smart and fun; they will take care of you and it was always reassuring to have them around. The hotel and restaurant staff are incredibly nice and accommodating also...this is the type of place that remembers your name and makes it friendly...you are NOT just another number on their list. If you don’t see it on the menu, just ask and they’ll make it if they have the ingredients (for example, we asked for chicken adobo and the chefs made it...every night when requested!!). The wifi was consistent, and cleanliness great! I can’t speak highly enough of the staff - I always enjoy seeing their faces and smiles and hearing their jokes. I respect the family that runs this place; very ethical and do a lot for the locals, solid people. Can’t wait to see them...
