SEE END OF REVIEW FOR UPDATE
First things first, I'll start with positivity. It was 11am on Sunday and when we asked if it would be possible to have something quick to eat we were offered a bacon sandwich (they don't normally offer a sandwich on the menu so this was very accommodating). "Great" we said and sat down.
Now, why did I rate this visit one star? I'll start at the beginning. After taking a seat at one of the tables outside I was immediately aware that the chairs were a little flimsy for the man of a fuller figure. They were thin framed, folding red metal and I just didn't feel comfortable sitting on them as they swayed a little while I was sat down, so I went inside to ask if I could use one of the wooden chairs from the tables indoors. An older woman (I'm not sure even worked there) gestured towards a chair, as I picked it up she snatched the pillow from it. I wasn't too bothered and said that I wouldn't need the pillow anyway and I let it slide. Moments later the pillow was taken out to me with on apology from another member of staff which was a kind gesture.
Seating debacle over we sat in anticipation of our bacon sandwiches. They arrived and while they were of a decent size and accompanied by some salad the bread was very hard and what we'd consider stale, it certainly wasn't fresh. We were told "This is what's it's like on a Sunday in France, can't get good bread anywhere." which is bizarre as there is a bakery selling fresh bread just 3 doors down the street.
The bacon was nice besides there being only one rasher per roll, luckily I ordered two rolls so i was able to double up and dump half the bread.
It just wasn't a nice dining experience. I'd almost have preferred they had told us it wasn't possible to make us a sandwich than offer what they did. At least we could have moved on and not had the rest of the uncomfortable experience.
The drinks we had were two Cokes and a Hot Chocolate. The coke was given to us in a glass, i'm not sure if it came from a can or a bottle or even a larger bottle.. Normally I'd expect my coke to be served in a glass bottle when I am eating at a bistro/restaurant. The hot chocolate I'm told was not great and lacking in flavour however not the worst we've had.
We were checked on twice during our experience and both times we explained about the bread situation but it didn't seem to be an acceptable concern. Which is a little disappointing as we'd consider it valuable feedback. Everybody has a bad day every now and then, but I'm not sure I'd give it another chance.
A few observations from our visit:
We appeared to be the only people there despite the staff looking run off their feet. Except the old woman who was just wandering around aimlessly.
There were too many (presumed staff) just lingering around, which in general makes the place look untidy and disorganised.
In our opinion coca cola should be served in glass bottles not by the glass.
The hot chocolate wasn't good but certainly not the worst we've ever had.
While we appreciate the gesture of offering us a sandwich, we wish they hadn't and we could have avoided the experience all together.
Overall a huge disappointment for a place that has made the effort to open the doors on a Sunday in France.
UPDATE Thanks for the clarification RE number of people in the workplace. With all due respect, it makes the places look disorganised. The fact that your mother in law has Alzheimers doesn't upset me at all, I wasn't even aware. However if that is the case, she was clearly having a negative impact on front of house proceedings, maybe give her a job in the kitchen where she can't interact with customers but has the social interaction and attention she needs..
Lessons to be learned here are, that while it's lovely to have family to stay and lend a hand, business is business and while at work things should remain professional. During our visit there was very little professionalism encountered.
I have no doubts that The George's reputation is great and that standards are usually high. Like I said, everyone...
Read moreDespite being in a sleepy village in the Haute Vienne countryside, in the middle of Limousin cattle country, Le Georges has several vegan options, vegan cheeses, desserts and gluten free options. My friends and I dined on the terrace on a warm Thursday evening and had a lovely time. Billie served us and explained our options, including different cheeses we could have in the veggie burger. She happily substituted rice for noodles in the tofu dish for my gluten intolerant friend and brought her some gluten free bread to go with her Greek salad. She also had gluten free beer. My other friend and I had a cheeseburger. The burger was tasty and made with lentils and either rice or another white carbohydrate. We had the choice of several condiments, including bbq sauce, ketchup, mayo and sriracha mayo. The burger also came with a homemade curried apple chutney, which was delicious. We were offered tarte tatin and vanilla ice cream for dessert but were sadly too full to partake. Not to be left out, Billie offered my gluten free friend a warm almond biscuits with red fruits, red fruit coulis and ice cream. When we all declined dessert, we were offered a complimentary warm almond biscuit to try. They were delicious! The only negative for me was no oat barista for a coffee but I was assured that plant milks are usually available, so I look forward to a coffee after my meal when I return next Sunday to enjoy the Neil Diamond tribute...
