Aux diables verts — Restaurant in Bernay

Asked in polite French for a menu. While walking away I got some reply I didn't understand or could really hear. Waited a bit then went inside to ask in English and waiter got impolite straight away. Mentioning he had "clearly" told me they didn't serve food after 14h. I asked him why he was walking away while telling me, keeping me from even asking what he was saying. He didn't agree and either way they had stopped serving. All in a way like I should have guessed. Which I commented on and that we wouldn't be stopping here again in the week we were staying in town. He followed me outside to tell me in front of the guests sitting outside that I shouldn't be expecting french ppl to speak English, that I was lucky he did and I should have practiced my French before coming here. I'm baffled. Update, my husband went in to pay and ask why the waiter was so rude. He didn't get far, the bloke started swearing in English and told us to leave the premises, he didn't care we didn't pay, but to immediately leave. I can understand if readers think more happened to get such a reaction from the waiter. But nothing else happened. This is all about me asking for a menu and asking again, but in English that I didn't understand his reply and why he gave me no chance to explain I didn't...

We were staying near this beautiful town for two weeks, visiting from the U.S. We had the pleasure of eating here several times for dinner. The food was always prepared perfectly.
