Grill Saint Martin — Restaurant in Bernay

Waitress dropped tray of drink on my wife. Jacket, top, trousers, even underwears saturated. After a couple of minutes no one came to help or apologies. So we Went to the toilet to try to dry her ourself. When we got back to the table we had to dry our seats ourself, and ask for someone to clean the broken glass away. Kept being pushed to order food, unfortunately by this time we were too upset to eat. At the end of the main I asked for the manager, who could only shout at the waitress!! (She can contact me if she need a witness for an harassment case). And then when we were leaving, the manager came on the parking right in my face to argue how nice he was, and we only should have had the appéritif for free (who consisted of a single Americano for the 4 of us). I mean even the free meal is not gonna cover the dry cleaning cost !! But to have the manager asking for a fight on the parking of his own restaurant ! Very good homemade food, quick service, surprising find along the road to Dinan from Paris

In a small town, Verneuil Sur-rest. A small, quaint restaurant as part of a motel with a décor reminiscent of a 70’s Pizza Hut with dark wood and red and white curtains. Huge fish tank, very nicely maintained. Diner feel but had a French family restaurant menu.

For starters, there was a slice chicken liver pate with a hint of herb de provence, tender with toast points and butter. A vegetable stew chocked full of veggies in a rich tomato kissed broth, croutons and grated parmesan.

For mains, there was a seared duck breast, large side of tender haricot vert with a salad of fresh greens in a red wine vinaigrette. The duck had a crisp skin,a little past medium but great flavor. Nous avons dîné ici un soir en ayant réservé à l’avance. Le cadre est mignon, il y a un grand parking et c’est vrai que les prix sont attractifs. Mais alors… le service et la qualité des plats, c’est une autre histoire.

Dès le départ, tout était lent. Très lent. Long pour prendre la commande, long pour l’apéro, long pour les plats. On aurait pu pardonner si l’ambiance avait été chaleureuse, mais le serveur principal était tout sauf agréable. Quand on commande les formules (entrée/plat ou plat/dessert), il nous sort avec un ton sec et expéditif : « Non mais le dessert on verra après » — déjà ça, ça met l’ambiance.

Arrivent les entrées : une soupe clairement en brique pour mon ami, une salade aux gésiers correcte de mon côté. Puis les plats : là, c’est le sketch. Mon ami demande sa viande saignante, il la reçoit… carrément bleue. Je demande une sauce piquante, le serveur me dit « Je sais pas s’il a mis le piquant, TU me diras » — spoiler alert : il n’y avait aucun piquant. J’ai dû demander du Tabasco pour sauver la sauce. On a bien rigolé, mais bon…

Et alors le clou du spectacle : mon ami demande à faire recuire son steak. Le serveur revient 30 secondes plus tard avec exactement le même morceau, même cuisson. Zéro changement. Il repart donc une DEUXIÈME fois au grill et là c’est enfin à peu près la cuisson demandée. Le serveur passe alors à côté de nous, regarde l’assiette et lâche d’un ton ultra condescendant : « Ah bah… c’était bien cuit qu’IL voulait en fait ! » Avec l’insistance sur « IL voulait », genre le client est débile. On s’est tous regardés, un peu choqués mais un peu hilare aussi... Ce genre de remarque, ça te flingue l’ambiance direct. Ça nous a clairement laissé un goût amer.

En résumé : pas cher, oui. Mais pas bon, pas pro, pas agréable. Je ne comprends pas les avis positifs, à moins qu’on n’ait vraiment pas eu de chance puisque le restaurant était complet ce soir là. Nous, en tout cas, on n’y...
