We planned a 5k guided snowshoe excursion up and around nearby Mont Buet and la Cascade de Bérard before settling in for a gorgeous Sunday lunch in Vallorcine -- aka Valley of the Bears, though there are no bear. Rather, comfortable portions of curated French and European regional cuisine, served in a sunny chalet with a relaxed and elegant international vibe. The soupe à l'oignon is delicate and sophisticated and unlike any other version you'll find in the Alps (I highly recommend) and the wine list features Savoie favourites (I had a bio Mondeuse Noire) as well as further afield accessible French classics, from Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhône. You can sit outside for an ala carte lunch, but the Lunch du Jour was superlative - and reasonable. If you choose the later seating (12:30 or 2), you may wait an extra few minutes for your table, because they don't rush you out. However, our table was finally asked to give way to our reservation - the staff still had us in mind. If you are skiing, it is ski-in (from LeTour), gondola-out (5-min easy walk). Staff was absolutely on their toes in a real busy environment - the kind of situation which would have worn on staff of lesser quality. All the while, always a friendly smile. Read moreDon’t bother to go to this place. They ask you to wait 30 mins to provide a table. Which is fine, I was with mi kids ready to spend money on the bar while waiting for the table. However a few minutes later the same person who asked to wait come around saying they can’t serve us with no reason whatsoever, only 12:30pm. I can only assume I’m not a french speaker and that’s the reason as they couldn’t bother to speak in English, half of the tables inside and outside were completely empty. Better try...
