The l'Ile aux Oiseaux is one of two waterside offerings on the stretch of the Canal du Midi between Castelnaudary and Carcassonnes. Situated on the banks of the canal by Bram Harbour, it provides easy access for those on the water.
On the Friday night we dined at the restaurant it was packed. A reservation would be well advised, although our own efforts to contact the restaurant over the course of the day were assiduously blocked by a polite, but insistent, answering machine. We were nevertheless given a table on the deck serving the bar menu. The table itself offered a nicely shaded view of the canal and a pleasant breeze.
The view was the best aspect of what was otherwise an underwhelming dining experience. The esoteric menu included a variety of allegedly Polynesian-influenced seafood dishes, such as a tuna cerviche served with a salad inexplicably dressed in mustard sauce. There were no non-seafood dishes on offer. My oysters to start were tasty, but accompanied by only a slice of lemon and hunk of butter, leaving me missing red wine vinegar and shallots (and wondering what to do with the cold block of butter).
The highlight was the main course - a jambalaya under a different name - which was generously proportioned and well spiced. But even this had some odd ingredients - carrots and mango chunks made strange bed fellows. And the fish and squid were far too chewy, over-cooked and undercooked respectively.
The deserts were, frankly, terrible. The stewed fruit salad was packed with nuts and served in a tall glass that made transporting the mainly liquid contents to one's mouth on a long sundae spoon a serious challenge. I gave up. My partner's coffee creme brûlée was burnt black and must have contained a flask of espresso, such was the overpowering coffee taste. Two spoonfuls were enough to confirm that that ice cream would be the only safe choice here.
Perhaps the food is better in the main restaurant. Perhaps a busy Friday overwhelmed the small kitchen. Perhaps my fellow reviewers are looking a little too favourably on their experience by comparing it to the most obvious alternative on the Canal du Midi - pasta cooked on a small gas hob in the bowels of a canal boat. But this restaurant would not, in my opinion, survive if it had any competition.
Overall I would say the chef would be much better off taking advantage of the great location to offer either classic French fare or authentic South Pacific seafood. It seemed instead they were trying to create dishes they were unfamiliar with. We won't be returning, but given the few options available on the canal I wouldn't rule it out for those...
Read moreMy travelling companions and I had the immense pleasure of dining at L'Île aux Oiseaux in Bram, after concluding our idyllic journey along the Canal du Midi.
From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the restaurant's alluring atmosphere. Nestled amidst the beauty of Bram, this establishment radiates an irresistible charm that instantly made us feel welcomed.
The service was impeccable. Each member of the staff was wonderfully attentive, treating us not merely as guests, but as cherished friends they hadn't seen in a while. They were quick to respond to our needs, gracious with their service, and efficient without being intrusive - a perfect balance, rarely achieved elsewhere.
Now onto the main event - the cuisine. The food was simply divine. Each plate that emerged from the kitchen was like a beautifully composed symphony, where each ingredient played its part in creating a harmonious and flavorful masterpiece. From the appetizers to the main course, and all the way to the dessert, every dish was a testament to the chef's skill, creativity, and passion for gastronomy.
The setting of L'Île aux Oiseaux is simply sublime. The restaurant offers an intimate ambiance where the beauty of the surrounding Bram countryside is the perfect backdrop to this fine dining experience. It was the tranquility we had been yearning for on this vacation.
In conclusion, dining at L'Île aux Oiseaux was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our trip. It's a perfect encapsulation of what we had hoped for from our holiday - breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality, and exquisite cuisine.
L'Île aux Oiseaux, thank you for an unforgettable evening. We cannot recommend this gem...
Read moreWhat a delightful French restaurant scene: the sun dappling the dining table; the barge in the background and all before we talk about the food and staff. Table was booked for 4 but we needed 6. Despite the restaurant being fully booked, Meg and David said, 'no problem'. The sun started to be too hot for the people at the end of the table, again, 'no problem, we move your table'. Now for the food. The starters, I had the flavoursome tuna tartan with a scoop of light sorbet on top which was a perfect accompaniment while served on a light bed of dressed rocket leaves. For the main, I had the swordfish, perfectly cooked with puree carrot and celeriac. Oh my, gone to food heaven. Others in our party had the cuttlefish, amazing flavours. Each of the six of us had something different and every dish was perfect. It is hard to achieve that. The staff were so attentive and well trained with attention to detail. Even the lovely collie dog was a sweetheart. Kept to the house entrance if you are not dog lovers as we are. It was the hubs birthday so we were treated to a digestif. Happy people floating home. The setting by the river, the food and staff all in a perfect ambience would give a perfect score. Well done Meg & David plus your wonderful staff. We will see you again....
