le grand monarque donzy — Restaurant in Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire

Donzy is a great unspoilt pretty little village convenient when visiting Sancerre and this end of the Loire. Le Grand Monarque is a charming very comfortable hotel run by the proprietors, Anne –Marie, restaurant and reception and Mark the Chef, both of whom are quite delightful and provide friendly efficient service. Our room at the top of a spiral stone staircase (this is not a hotel if you cannot manage a climb) was a good size very clean and an excellent bed, large well equipped bathroom. Dinner was served outside on the terrace and the food was excellent, gazpachio with flaked white crab & pepper sorbet, and the queue de boeuf were brilliant. The wine list provides a good choice well representative of the Loire of course but other regions are included. We drank Pouilly Fume and a red Sancerre that would give many Burgundies a run for the money. All in all a wonderful find and we will definitely be...

This was one of the worst hotel experiences ever. The hotel is located in a ghost town.There is literally nothing in the entire village. The restaurant is mediocre. There is only the option of three preset menus. No A la carte. The wine list is extremely limited for the restaurant located in the Loire Valley. Food presentation is the judge. The quality of the food is mediocre. Definitely not exciting. |The rooms are comfortable and clean if you ignore the mold in the bathroom. The decoration resembles some remote take on French modern style. Wireless is advertised but none existent. |Breakfast is only served until 9:30 AM and no one will ask if you want it or not. |Prices are exuberant for what is offered. |Avoid this hotel...
