Auberge Saint Donat — Restaurant in Grasse

I am updating my review from several years ago. Also, my review is only for dinner (available only Friday and Saturday nights in the off-season) not the fixed-price lunch available weekdays. Also note that the restaurant has changed owners/managers twice since the review below.

New ownership/management changed in April 2025. In general the staff is very friendly and the food delicious, especially the pizza! (honestly over the last few years the pizza got awful, but now it is back to superbe and delicious!) For those items I give 5 stars.

But recently we went back on a Saturday night with friends who have also eaten there (evening) many times before. The food was good, delicious and staff friendly. But when we tried to order the house Rosé the staff told us that they do not serve the house wine in the evening, only at lunch, and we can only order wine from the menu. Well, the cheapest bottle of Rosé on the menu was 30 euros. This is ridiculous. I sincerely ask the new management to reflect upon this decision and make the house wine available at dinner again. Oh, and while I'm reflecting, Cafe Gourmand should be on the menu too. Thanks for your consideration...

Prior review from many years ago: Pizza at Auberge St Donat is always delicious and this visit met expectations. I love and highly recommend...

Très mauvaise expérience, arrivée seule avec mes enfants, (j’avais réservé par téléphone) le patron (gentil et avenant) ne m’a pas expliqué qu’il s’agissait d’un menu « unique” (avec les enfants ça peut être contraignant) bref nous sommes arrivés le patron nous a instales et puis après il s’est complètement effacé.. c’est à partir de là où c’était pas terrible le serveur vraiment froid pas gentil du tout il nous faisait même la tête (mes enfants se tentaient parfaitement à table pour tant) m’a selon lui expliqué leur « menu unique » et nous a servi 2 entrées au lieu de 3 nous n’avons pas compris du tout, je demande des explications il réponds froidement -bon si c’est ce que vous voulez je vous aporte le 3 eme plat -… à la fin du repas il me dit sans gêne, même fière de lui! -c’était pour pas vous faire payer 3 repas vu que les enfants ne consomment pas tout…- c’était surtout la manière odieuse de me l’annoncer que le fait de payer ou pas… c’est normal de payer 3 plats si l’en considère qu’on a mangé 3 plats c’est NORMAL, mais c’est son comportement odieux qui nous a tous choqués! et le fait qu’il ne m’a jamais expliqué quoi que ce soit Nul et désagréable à souhait! je m’en veux de ne pas avoir demandé son prénom il était si désagréable c’est ne pas juste que les autres serveurs soient confondus avec lui… Monsieur le propriétaire soyez attentif vis à vis de l’accueil réservé aux clients de la part de ce serveur (cheveux courts châtains yeux marron mesurant 1,75 plus au moins, servant du côté de la salle lumineuse blanche et avec un courant d’air et des fenêtres coulissantes) Le repas était bon en général et c’est dommage que à cause d’un serveur malpoli et mal aimable les gens ne revient...

Very different format for this restaurant and seems very successful. Only one choice on menu, varies day to day. The food was great and amazing value. Our table of four had a three course meal, two bottles of wine and two soft drinks and coffees, worked out €23.50 each. Excellent friendly service, Only gave 4 for atmosphere as it is on a main road roundabout, would that stop me coming again? Absolutely not, definitely on my list to return to.
