I think the only reason we werenât looking for any warning signs was that weâd had such an amazing time in the area â everyone very friendly and welcoming, full of hospitality, and all restaurants, bars and ice cream parlours had uniformly been fairly priced, completely transparent and fair. So when we decided to go to this restaurant on our last night â as it was only a few hundred metres from where we were staying â we had our guard down. The waiter, who seemed like he was also the manager, was friendly and joked around. Weâd reserved a table for the evening. He brought he big board that served as a menu. Heâd said that they served fish from the dayâs catch, absolutely fresh. My wife and I chose the fish, the kids wanted pizza. He was adamant that they shouldnât have pizza (it wasnât very good, he warned themâŠoddâŠ) but that they should have fish too. Ultimately we convinced him that kids would have pizza. We pointed to the item on the menu board that said âFish of the Dayâ â Poisson de Jour â priced at 22,95âŹ. He said great, beckoned us to follow him, then pointed at the cabinet with the fish. We pointed at one, he said great, and that was it. Back at the table the fish came, he cut it for us, we ate. I have to say that it tasted very good (as did the kidsâ pizzas). So far so good. Then the bill. Weâd started wondering if the fish was going to cost us the Fish of the Day price, since it was so goodâŠbut we were shocked when the bill came. Instead of 22,95⏠per person, it (just the fish) was instead 60⏠per person. So instead of a bill for the two of us of under 50⏠- we were on a budget, and had calculated we could afford that â we were hit with a bill of 120âŹ. This was such a complete tourist rip-off scam that we were both extremely angry. Heâs obviously done this many times before, since it was so smoothly done â we see the price for fish of the day, choose that, he gets us to point at some fish, doesnât tell us that thereâs any price difference, then hits us with a huge bill. We had also told him that we were going home the next day â another big mistake from usâŠbut, even though weâre seasoned travellers, as I say, our guards were down. Someone else who is knowledgeable of gastronomy in France said that this was in fact an expensive fishâŠheâd guess that one would pay 80⏠for the whole fish at an upscale restaurant. If heâd told us the price of the fish, we could have chosen whether we wanted that or notâŠbut this was a very deliberate ripping off of a couple of tourists who would be gone the next day. Rip off. Scam....
Read moreWe had lunch there yesterday. The waiter was a bit slow, forgot half of what we asked and we had no water offered. So we had to ask them a jug of water after half an hour cause my kids was thirsty and we had finished our water bottle from our bag. I have ordered the fish skewers and it was off for me. I come from an island and eat fish my hole life, this one was smelly and definitely sitting for quite a while in the fridge. Even with adding a lot of lemon juice the fish was awful. The food was served with a tiny mini plate of veggies. Not even warm but cold. The portion was really small for the price (1 skewer in my plate lol)..âŹ21.50!!! I had to order a pizza on top because I couldn't eat the fish skewer and I was really hungry. We have ordered for My kids a grilled fish and fries. The waiter told us they would made fillet and prepared them. But we had a tiny hole piece of grilled fish and veggies instead of fries. Also, we had to take the bones off as my kids are under 6. Not a really pleasant culinary experience and definitely not worth the stop to eat. Thankfully the calanques...
