Chèvre & Chou — Restaurant in Le Puy-en-Velay

We ate dinner here with locally-based family for the second time since Chèvre et Chou opened its doors.

The food was just as good as we remembered from last time, and it's brilliant to see them fully booked as a matter of course. The menu is simple - three daily entrées, plats and desserts, plus cheese. The wine list is compact but excellent. Prices are extremely reasonable.

The best things we ate this time around included a tartelette filled with goat's cheese mousse, beetroot, and squash. The pastry was deliciously crisp and studded with poppyseeds. But the absolute pick of the night was a poached pear, stuffed with a vanilla parfait on a gingerbread base. Definitely the best dessert we can remember in years.

Each year I spend a week riding my bike in France, and each year I try to find somewhere nice for a Sunday lunch ride - this year I'm staying in Le Puy en Velay, and realising it was the Bastille Day weekend, reckoned it would be busy so booked lunch here way in advance on the basis of the website and reviews. Good choice! Absolutely lovely experience; a shady front terrace with views of people driving badly round the nearby traffic roundabout (believe me, this is entertainment for the solo traveller), service that's unhurried but efficient, and as others have noted, a limited menu of Really Nice Dishes.
