La Cabane d'Arthur — Restaurant in Les Sables-d'Olonne

Prudence!! Yes this is a great spot on the beach but if you have any sort of allergies STEER clear. They have embraced the use of iPad style technology to place your order via a server. However they do not communicate allergies to the kitchen. The waitress who is working alone therefore has no time to make sure or take care is rushing around delivering food from the kitchen, with food that can send you to hospital, clearly showing the kitchen has not understood or the employers are unconcerned for your safety. My wife was served beautiful food but the whole experience was marred by the lack of care taken over a serious allergy. My final plate the desert was served with a piece of butter gateau yet it was only when the chef came to the table with our coffees I was able to confirm with him that the gateau had indeed been made with butter. He was very proud of his butter gateau he said it is really good. I’m sure if they want SAMU outside for publicity then they are heading in the right direction. La Cabane d’Arthur you have the technology in place with your ordering system to ensure the chef/kitchen and serving staff all know that they have someone sitting at a particular table on order number X !! Superb beach eatery offering a much needed alternative to the trad French seafood scene. Don't get me wrong, there are some superb restaurants in Sables d'Olonne, but for this Englishman it's great to have a break and a serious vegetable hit!

We arrived way too early for our booking (you will need to book, because this place is popular) and were promptly seated and served.

The menu is clever mixing many items to form different dishes, but it is all fresh, full of flavour and fast.

Space is tight, but well arranged. I suggest anybody with limited mobility sits inside where tables and chairs are at normal heights. Wheelchairs would be difficult. Outside, it's all quite low which was not a problem for us. Outside is quite magical as you face across the bay into the sunset. With the sea at your feet and a warm breeze, what's not to like?

I'll let the pictures speak for the food, but the burgers we didn't order looked awesome too.

Une déception cette année…

Nous venons en vacance chaque année et nous n’avions qu’une hâte c’est de passer une soirée à la Cabane d’Arthur et son magnifique cadre à boire des ti punch à la coco. Nous avions adoré notre visite l’année passée où nous avions prit quelques planches à partager tous ensemble. Bref un super moment convivial !

Cette année c’est la douche froide. Nous sommes 5 et nous décidons de réitérer l’expérience de l’année précédente. Nous commandons donc 4 planches et un burger.

Nous tombons des nues lorsque la serveuse nous indique qu’il nous est désormais interdit de commander uniquement des planches (maintenant considérées comme des entrées). Qu’il faut nécessairement prendre des plats principaux. La politique de la maison ayant changé.

Nous nous sentons donc obligé de commander des plats principaux alors que nous n’en avions pas spécialement envie ni la faim qui allait avec.

On se retrouve donc a nous plier en deux pour manger sur des tables bien trop basse par rapport aux banquettes ou à tenir nos assiettes. Ces tables sont adaptées pour picorer en buvant un verre mais pas pour de la restauration classique.

Si vous forcez a commander des plats principaux, il faut adapter la terrasse avec de vraies tables à hauteur.

Et pour finir, c’est à notre plus grand étonnement qu’un couple s’est installé à côté de nous à 21h30 pour manger. La serveuse leur indique que la cuisine est déjà fermée et que seuls quelques plats restent disponibles.

Ce couple a donc pu commander sans la moindre restriction, uniquement des planches. Chose qui nous avait été interdit 2h avant. Le profit.

Nous restons des clients. Nous réservons notre table et sommes libres de commander qu’une bière en terrasse ou qu’une entrée si nous n’avons pas très faim !
