Hotel Le Domaine 40410 Moustey 24/08/2011||||||Initial impressions of the Hotel Le Domaine in Moustey are not good as the outside eating area appeared neglected and dirty but we had little choice as we were hungry and the other local restaurants were shut. We sat outside, the tables and ground were covered in leaves and debris from the trees but there was a pond in the distance which helped to improve the view. My daughter chose the children’s menu, my son had the steak and chips and I had the rack of lamb. My daughter’s starter was ham which was just that, a slice of ham on a plate followed by nuggets & chips and then ice cream. For an eight year old this was OK but, everything seemed to be out of the freezer, including the bread rolls. Every other restaurant we ate at provided fresh bread but at Le Domaine they were little rolls which had obviously been frozen. My son’s steak and chips also appeared to be out of the freezer but was edible. Unfortunately, my rack of lamb was just awful. I had asked for it “bien qui” but most of it was totally raw and it was so tough it was almost impossible to get the knife through it, it must have come from a very old, tough sheep. At one point I had two lumps of meat in my mouth connected by a sinew (or something) so that if I had swallowed I would have had one lump half way down my throat and the other half still in my mouth, I had to use my finger to break the connection so that I could swallow both lumps independently! I do still have most of my own teeth and if I had known what was in store I would have sharpened them for the occasion. The lamb was so disgusting I gave up and tried the vegetables. The stuffed tomato and onion were almost quite tasty but the potato was revolting. It was supposed to be a fancy little circle with swirls over it but it was obviously cheap instant mash. For these culinary delights the charges were 22 Euros for the steak and 24 Euros for the lamb, top prices for the lowest possible quality.||||I took my plate back to the kitchen and told them that it was inedible. Unfortunately I do not speak much French and so I could not express myself as much as I would have liked and they did not speak English. When my son and daughter had finished their meals I asked for the bill and was surprised to find that I was being charged the full price, a total of 62 Euros. I decided to pay a small amount towards the lamb and walked towards the door, the waitress met me outside and I explained that I was not paying the full price but a total of 45 euros, she grabbed my arm and pushed me through the door so that I was inside the hotel, she then blocked the exit and called for support from her colleagues so that there were three of them in the bar. Once again I tried to explain that I had been unable to eat the meat as it was so tough but they started shouting at me and were obviously not going to accept that the meal had not been good enough. At this point an old man in a dirty white sleeveless vest appeared and he spoke English so I was able to explain to him that the meat was not fit for a dog. He disagreed and said that it was a good cut of meat. He said that if I didn’t pay my car would be blocked in the car park so that we could not leave. Apart from the chef, the two women and the old man were starting to get very aggressive. I had already been grabbed and shoved into the bar and as I did not know what they would do next I suggested that they call the police, unfortunately my mobile phone was in the car but we were also in the middle of nowhere and it could take the police a long time to get to us if they even turned up. The old man cut off two small pieces of meat chewed them once, gulped them down, and declared the lamb to be perfect. He then asked me what my job was and when I told him that I do not have a job he said that I did not want to pay because I could not afford it! I did not bother to reply to this as it was totally ridiculous, my credit rating is better than the USA! By now, my daughter was getting quite upset so simply to avoid her suffering too much trauma in this extremely hostile, aggressive and intimidating atmosphere I paid the bill in full and we left.||||Over the last thirty years I have eaten in restaurants all over the world and I can honestly say that this is the most unpleasant experience I have ever had. Judging by the state of the Hotel le Domaine they are desperate for business, there is no excuse for such awful food but presumably their cash flow is so tight they can only buy the cheapest ingredients. To serve such poor quality food is a disgrace but the behaviour of the two waitresses and the old man in the dirty vest was inexcusable. If my daughter had not been with me I would have made a much greater effort to contact the local police. Luckily this was an isolated example but it does not do much for Anglo French relations or the local...

Read moreA delightful family run hotel which we came upon by chance driving through France to Spain. The hotel is typically French with a delightful restaurant. The sleeping accommodation is in a separate building to the main hotel/restaurant, be it a 10 metre walk from the main building. The rooms are small but well furnished and clean. We had a/c in our room which provided hot air and worked all night, as it was quite cool when the sun went down. The bed was very firm but surprisingly comfortable. TV and internet, 8 mbs download! (free) connection was provided. ||We had delicious steak and French fries served in the restaurant, there were other choices on the menu,...
