Cafe Du Centre La Trimouille — Restaurant in Montmorillon

Have been here quite a number of times over last couple of years with my parents whilst visiting France and despite being told by quite a few locals about the recent poor service we went again, but unfortunately this evening will be our last visit. We sent a message to reserve a table, message was seen but not replied too, so we called and left a message on the answer phone as instructed to do so on the website, absolutely no where is it stated that this place is reservation only! We arrived, and sat a table with no reservation signage on it, one of our party went into the restaurant and was welcomed by the chef. Had our drinks and food order taken, all absolutely fine. We waited a considerable time for our food to arrive. When it eventually arrive and we were eating, the irate managed furiously approached the table and started accusing us of taking someone’s reservation and that we shouldn’t be sat there, his rudeness and incompetence in customer service about the situation was very embarrassing for himself and the cafe. We were quite frankly in shock at his behaviour, he then stormed off. We finished our meal and called him over to express our disappointment at his actions, to which he further blamed us for his stress and that he doesn’t check his messages or answerphone for bookings. Actually unbelievable that he is in a customer service position. Such a shame he lets this place down so much as food and atmosphere is lovely. Our first visit to this busy cafe/ restaurant. We had a very pleasant experience. Whilst it is imperative to book (especially summer time) the service is as you would expect from a busy eatery with 3 or 4 staff, not a long wait, time to take in the atmosphere, and all that is going on. There is a huge TV with sports on (this is not our thing really) but understand the need for it, and to be honest didn't take notice of it after a while. The food is simple but well executed. Burgers, salads, pizza and steaks. We opted for pizzas I have to say it was delicious thin crispy and very tasty (large also!) Lots of choice for drinks. On March 10, I had stopped in La Trimouille only for a couple of days on my tour of Nouvelle Aquitaine and discovered Cafe Du Centre. What a wonderful place. Owners Ken and his partner/chef Nicky were delightful and welcoming. The clientele was very friendly and regular and fun to be around. The food is excellent bistro fare with daily specials such as the generous steak frites served with a fried egg and local cheese on top, onion rings, coleslaw, green salad and fresh baguette. I actually stayed 12 nights and had supper there each evening each time something different. Excellent selection of wines and beers and delicious house made desserts.
