Le Comptoir Des Compagnons — Restaurant in Montpellier

For many years, we used to go to Le Comptoir des Compagnons for coffee and a cake. However, over recent years, they have increasingly insisted on you ordering a meal if you want to sit down. I can understand this completely in high season or at busy times of day. In early January, I walked with my wife from Palavas-les-Flots to the Maguelone. It was cold and windy and we fancied a coffee and a short rest in a warm place - my wife is currently undergoing chemotherapy. The restaurant was almost completely empty at 11.50 a.m.. "Any chance of sitting down for a coffee? Just for 10 minutes?" we asked in French. "No," came the reply, "only if you sit down for a meal. Those are the rules. I didn't write the rules. You can have a coffee to go, though." (I've slightly paraphrased this conversation for brevity). So much for Christian hospitality. We didn't take up the offer and decided to follow a man, his pregnant wife and donkey down the lane as they looked for another inn that would give them a room. I don't want to be unfair with this review. The food as I remember it is fine. The location is very nice. But I can't give any stars...

Service restauration du midi très décevant ! Ma femme, ma belle soeur, son mari et moi sommes venus pour déjeuner samedi 28 juin 2024. Arrivés un peu avant midi, nous avons attendu derrière la ligne/barrière. Une dame obèse aux cheveux couleur jaune et lunettes a lourdement insisté auprès de moi pour me donner notre classement d'arrivée devant tout le monde (3ème position). Je n'avais absolument pas l'intention de faire passer ma famille avant quique ce soit. Elle s'est présentée comme étant la "responsable des ESAT" en désignant son équipe du dos de sa main et en me demandant si je savais ce que cela signifiait. En attendant l'ouverture du restaurant, nous avons acheté des produits alimentaires en vente et cette dame a placé le chocolat sous les 4 pots de gros sel de Camargue. J'en ai inversé le sens dans le sac papier devant elle. À l'ouverture du restaurant et une fois placés, nous avons commandé les plats. Puis, nous avons demandé à notre sympathique serveuse s'il était possible d'en changer un. La responsable en question a répondu que "non" alors que nous venions de commander depuis moins d'une minute. Très étonné, j'ai reposé la question, ce après quoi elle a trouvé une 1ère solution en rajoutant notre nouvelle commande sans annuler la précédente. Elle m'a très sincèrement coupé l'appétit et je le lui ai dit ! Je n'ai pas pris cette nouvelle commande. Elle m'a vraiment coupé l'appétit. Lorsque ma belle-sœur est allée régler la note, cet dame ne lui a même pas demandé si tout s'était bien passé alors qu'elle lui avait laissé un pourboire. Je n'ose même pas imaginer que cette différence de traitement était due à l'origine chinoise de ma femme et de sa famille. Elle a gâché notre bonheur d'être dans ce lieu magnifique. Je...

I have never received such unfriendly service. 6 servers standing around chatting and drinking and we sat unserved for 20 minutes. I then went up to ask where I could order to be told to go to the pay desk. I took 4 cans from the fridge and was told I can’t get drinks from there I have to wait at my table. I then waited another 15 minutes and eventually left when a waiter sat next to us on his phone. I expressed my discontent on the way out and the lady could not have cared less.
