La Légende — Restaurant in Oloron-Sainte-Marie

It would be difficult to find a more picturesque location, nestled beneath the medieval church in the centre of sleepy Suaveterre de Bearn, a fairytale village with views out to the Pyrenees. We came on a day when they served a set menu for 17 euros, so the price was very reasonable, but I’m not sure they do this all the time which might explain some of the other more critical comments on price. In any case, the food was exceptional. Simple, locally sourced, elegant. Sometimes some of the locals speak a little unkindly about the place, especially the portion sizes, but I expect that is partly because the usual menu in these parts is rich cheese followed by rich meat followed by more meat, and then cake. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a meat eater and have indulged happily in the gout-inducing menus of the Sud Ouest for many years now. Indeed I have come to love the food of this area. But after you’ve spent a few afternoons uncomfortably digesting Foie Gras and Confit du Canard even the heartiest meat-eater among us might fancy a change. This was certainly different, but without losing its connection to the food of the region. The ingredients were locally sourced, often in thoughtful ways that went beyond the usual suspects of the region. We had a polenta-like dish for example made from a corn varietal that was rescued from the brink of extinction from the region by a local producer. And despite warnings to the contrary, my hearty appetite was more than satisfied, and we left full, happy, and certainly willing...

A intimate venue tastefully decorated and homely inside. Service very friendly. Food was delicious but for € 22 each the portions were very small for Sunday and the price high. I had a small Tomatoe salad to start, one long bone small chop with a fatty piece on side and 2 small new potatoes with a spoon of vege mixture. All very tasty but not at all adequate. Dessert was few pieces of fruit in a delicious fruit sauce. Again a half of normal portion which is usually served in France. my husband did not want the starter so he was charged € 19. A simple issue spoilt it further. My husband drinks red wine and I drink white wine and as there were no carafs of wine we settled for a couple of glasses each at The most reasonable price on the menu of €4.50. We were charged € 10 euros ea for 2 glasses each. Total € 20. Minor error but worked out an expensive meal for the amount you obtain....

Je mets une étoile car si la cuisine est plutôt bonne, nous avons eu une très mauvaise expérience ce dimanche. Nous réservons une table pour 12h30, et lorsque nous arrivons, le resto est plein, la serveuse (sympa)ne s’attendait pas à tout ce monde. Le table est à l’écart, plutôt calme et agréable. Nous commandons le magret après avoir vu le plat sur d’autres tables. Il a l’air très bon. La serveuse est débordée, et nous avons eu nos assiettes 1h après être arrivés. Là, grosse surprise, au lieu d’avoir une jolie assiette avec un beau magret comme les autres tables, nous avons une petite assiette avec 3 fines et petites tranches de magret, et une cuillère d’épinards ! Très surpris nous en parlons à la serveuse qui nous confirme qu’ils ne s’attendaient pas à avoir autant de monde, alors le cuisiner essaye de servir tout le monde (sic!). Et par servir tout le monde, il entend diviser les assiettes!! Nous voyant insatisfaits après lui en avoir fait la remarque, la serveuse nous propose de nous offrir un dessert à 7€. Pour un plat à 24€ chacun! Ne voulant pas faire de scandale, nous acceptons, et après encore 20 minutes d’attente, elle nous apporte une mini part de tarte!!! Ah bah oui, il n’y avait plus de dessert non plus, alors là aussi le cuisinier a divisé les assiettes. C’est hallucinant. Je n’avais jamais vu cela dans aucun resto. Alors certes, la cuisine est sympa mais ultra simple, et nous repartons avec le sentiment de nous être fait arnaquer. Nous ne reviendrons pas. Si la serveuse nous avait dit dès le départ qu’il n’y avait plus de magret, nous aurions pris autre chose, mais diviser les assiettes c’est inadmissible. La table à côté de la nôtre a été très surprise de voir nos assiettes alors qu’ils avaient eu de belles parts. Ils ne reviendront pas non plus. Bref, ce n’est pas très...
