Steak N Shake — Restaurant in Sélestat-Erstein

So here I am again on the road with Mr H….. work, work, work!

Strasbourg not far behind us and facing a seven and half hour drive, with no sight of home before 9pm we decide to stop at the next services to fuel up. Car first. Us next. ‘Something warm?’ suggests Mr H. ‘Absolutely,’ I agree.

After several weeks on the road I’m feeling a bit burger-fatigued but we spot the Steak N Shake diner and it’s the most tempting “something warm” on offer, so burger it is. But no regrets today cos as fast food burger joints go, this one is the new daddy!

The Pros: Burger - freshly cooked (as in cooked when ordered rather than idling ages on a rack and being served barely warm and soggy). Salad - crisp and vibrant. Sauce - tasty and plentiful. Bun - nicely toasted on the inside, soft and fresh on the outside. Accompaniments & Extras - a good variety and generously given. Loved the runny egg and extra jalapeños on my burger. Chips - absolutely banging! Freshly homemade. Crispy. Salty. Hot. Price - so it costs a little more more than the average but we’re talking of a burger and fries that are way above average so in my opinion worth every penny. Service - polite, quick, easy.

The Cons: None.

I should also mention the tempting milkshakes (I’ll make room for one next time) and the diner itself which is clean, modern and spacious with tables well spaced apart.

My overall verdict: Steak N Shake is now my ‘go to’ for burgers.

As an american, nothing made me more excited than to see such an icon such as Steak and Shake here in France. Disappointment came over me immediately when walking in. Not only was the atmosphere way too modern for a steak and shake the meal for the misses and I costed over 50 euro. 2 simple burgers, fries and shakes. Outrageous. The shake was inedible tasted like mustard gas. I would rather drink the nice toliet water downstairs . The burger was high quality and so were the fries. they used real bacon in the bacon fries not bits . Which ruined the fries for me personally. Over all everything was fine. Promising concept at first, but chaotic team / structure. Kitchen layout and process designed without any clear SOPs.

Kitchen staff touching the beepers all customers touched with food safety gloves and afterwards not desinfecting or replacing them.

Orders are taking forever, not particularly clean either. Fries are handcuffed, but include many parts of potatoes that should be removed before cooking (sprouts, blackened pieces) and the burger bun is untoasted and stale. I...
