On a quiet Thursday evening in mid September, we walked into the Auberge de la Jument Verte a short amble from Villey-le-Sec with some anticipation. We'd been cycling during the day around the locality and 75km later had appetites to assuage. Our host greated us warmly and we picked from a choice of comfortable looking cosy corners in a fascinating dining room, bedecked with a range of local and historical artefacts and art. The wine list proved most interesting, with a generous selection mostly from all of France's recognised wine regions, but also some surprises. We played safe with a Petit Chablis to accompany delightful entrees of in house smoked salmon and chicken terrine with fresh dressed leaves. A local Burgogne proved a smooth and balanced foil for generous faux fillet steak and a delightfully light fresh fettuccine with fois gras and smoked duck breast. Cheese course, an option was swerved as our appetites were already sated, and we headed directly to dessert. An intriguing rhubarb tiramisu laced with a local pink liqueur and a dash of rum was exquisite. Pistachio cracker choux, raspberry sorbet was indeed a taste sensation with the autumnal raspberries proving intense flavours. All in all, a fabulous selection of well-balanced dishes, thoughtfully executed and presented. An evening to remember....and very...
Read moreWe ate dinner in this charming rural restaurant in Villey-le-Sec, situated in a marvellous location overlooking the Moselle valley. There is only a small menu with meat and fish options, together with a selection of offal!. I had a rather bland dish of snails to start, while my wife had an excellent in-house smoked salmon, which we both followed with lamb in a filo pastry casing, which was tasty but a little curious. We washed the meal down with a very fine bottle of Vins de Pays d'Oc. We passed on desserts. Service from the two charming staff was prompt and efficient. My one complaint about the place was the cost of the wine. While there was an interesting selection, there was there very little available under €40, even though the food is very reasonably priced. A couple of choices around the €30 mark would have been nice. Overall this is a lovely place for a meal if you are in the area. Booking is essential - every table was full on our visit. Note that there is a scenic terrace where you can dine if the...
