Lovely atmosphere with delicious food and friendly staff! Cadre très agréable, accueil chaleureux, mais sérieux, excellente cuisine!

English: This restaurant was recommended as a place to have a meal "you won't forget" in Rick Steve's guide to France and I heartily agree.

We stopped here on a 10 hour drive home across France. The kids were exhausted, so were we, and we wanted something to add a little interest to an otherwise long and boring day. It was the right choice!

We relaxed the moment we arrived in the mulberry shaded courtyard with its bubbling fountain. The kids were off to check out the cages of rabbits, goats and other farm animals and we only saw them while they ate. They were thrilled to get a close look at deer in the fields nearby and even our non-foody youngsters were drooling over the kid's menu (chicken and mashed potatoes-it was tasty!).

We got to enjoy our drinks and the 3 courses of our tasting menu: everything was perfectly cooked and the twists they put on traditional dishes with unusual spices and flavor combinations had us guessing the ingredients in admiration.

Of course, if we had wanted to ask, the friendly but professional staff would have gladly told us all about it: we interacted with 4 different staff members who were all obviously passionate about the food they were serving, yet joked and smiled in a way that makes you feel welcome (and is sometimes missing in restaurants of this caliber, gastronomically speaking).

The only part I found a little underwhelming was the dessert: it was very good, but it was not on the same par as the rest of the meal. Don't save space for it of it means skimping on the main courses!

The value for money here is excellent!

All in all, a lovely experience that had us feeling satisfied, relaxed, and curious about the region's cooking.

Also, I heard the staff speaking excellent English with other tables and the inside looked quite cozy on days the patio would be inaccessible. ................................................

We had an absolutely delicious dinner - we chose the 3 course menu. It was one of the best meals we have had in France. Our lovely host at our accommodation recommended and reserved this restaurant for us.

We have travelled from New Zealand to experience the beautiful chateau, vin, and cuisine of the Loire region. Unfortunately, once we sat down and ordered, we were ignored by our server and did not receive our bread, wine, or water while all the other tables received theirs. It was not until we enquired with another server that we received these items. Now that we have travelled to a few places in France we have realised this is the treatment some tourists receive (& was definitely how we felt at the time).

We hope this is not the case with l'etape Gourmand as the food and atmosphere were incredible. The second serveur was amazing and apologetic. However, the maître de (or main serveur did not treat us very well).

We sincerely hope it was in error that we had this experience, not because we were not french- which is why i have still given it a 5...

I'm writing this review for American parents with children who have typical American tastes. We came here with our 11 year old for dinner. Upon walking in she was slightly taken aback by some of the farm and hunting scenes depicted in the paintings and had an overall glum mood about dinner on general. The menu offered nothing that obviated her stated and we feared a very unpleasant dinner.

We ordered her the kids chicken dinner and our lovely motron server allowed us to sub pasta for potatoes (daughter does not eat potatoes). That change saved the day! Our daughter found the portion enough and the chicken to delicious!

We had the veal and the lamb whick we're both delicious. I didn't care much for the apricot glace frozen dessert as it tasted like white wine though. Would have preferred something chocolate on dessert menu.

Daughter loves the grounds and the charm old the farmhouse and sound up having a really great time despite our initial worries. I don't think the place is geared toward younger pallets but they do what they can to...

Wonderful meal, perfect ambience, fast friendly service. The foie gras appetizer was generous and well balanced with a lightly truffled piece as well as the main piece. The egg parfait was a real treat with artichokes and ham. I'm not even sure what our mains were, (fish of the day, and a mushroom dish) but they were heavenly. Dessert was to the same standard, and we were out the door for about €50/head including wine! Château Villandry was beautiful, but L'Étape Gourmande was the real highlight!

Very friendly staff and delicious food. We went in April so it wasn't too busy, but read online that in the summer you need a reservation (made fairly in advance). I believe there is also an inn on the grounds run by the restaurant owners, so I can see it getting busier. The aesthetic and ambiance were cozy and stereotypical of what you'd expect for an artisan French restaurant in the countryside. My one suggestion is to share the foie gras - it was too much for a single American to handle.
