Domaine de la Madone - Auberge- Beaujolais Winegrower — Restaurant in Villefranche-sur-Saône

My favourite family run vineyard in the area - a highlight of the valley tour. We took an organised tour of the region leaving from Lyon and while there may be bigger operators, this was by far the most charming and informative.

Jean-Marc offered a great personal tour of his meticulous, science meets art, refined over generations, wine making process. We followed the wine making journey from understanding terroir, vineculture, picking to aging, visited the cellar 🍷 and enjoyed a well explained & unrushed wine tasting across a range of varietals and vintages.

Our host made us feel very welcome and it was a true delight to taste his beautiful wines and enjoy our time there. We felt no pressure to purchase, but it was so good we took a dozen of our favourites, including a few bottles for a picnic back in Lyon the next day. At that point The Domaine del la Madonna didn’t have a restaurant, but that may have changed as he did have plans.

The Domaine has a nearby little stone chapel ⛪️ topped with namesake Madonna overlooking the rolling hills of surrounding vineyards make this a very pleasant and picturesque stop. Can’t wait...

We had a lovely lunch @ Domaine de la Madone. The salad was fresh and well balanced, the cheese plate was impressively generous, perfect for sharing. S'entendre dire "j'ai failli vous appeler"pour 15 min de retard, on baisse la tête en se disant que ça va être blindé et fabuleux."vous voulez être en terrasse ou a l'intérieur?" On répond dehors, il fait beau. Réponse"sachez que je ne pourrais pas vous mettre dedans si vous changez d'avis"! Oula, ça va vraiment être bien ce resto! Finalement, rempli a 1/3 le restaurant offre une carte plutôt restreinte, pas très qualitative et un peu cher! En plus, il y avait la place pour manger a l'intérieur si jamais on se faisait rincer par la pluie! Le supplément"chariot de fromage"a 8 €dans un menu a 30€, ça pique! D'ailleurs ça ce voit, la coupe sur les fromages n'est pas rafraîchi depuis longtemps. Dommage, tout y est, le repas était malgré tout correct mais le comportement du responsable de salle a dégradé...
