Another gem of the Beaujolais great dining map, La Table du Brouilly came recommended to me by a distinguished Beaujolais winemaker and, I am proud to add, friend of mine (we will call him Raphael 😉). And oh boy, did it not disappoint. The opening salvo came in the form of a succulent, fluffy brioche, with its flavour-packet accompanying butter. That hit the spot. The understated quality of a menu, as often, resides in its apparent simplicity, letting the sheer beauty of the underlying ingredients and the skills of the chef shine through. And shine they did! The ris de veau was in my opinion the crowning moment of an overall wonderful meal, accompanied by a great Cote de Py by Beaujolais winemaker extraordinaire Foillard, on that perfectly quaint village square. The owner introduced us to a delightful Argentine red with our desserts, to bring our Sunday lunch to a wonderful close and let us begin with a wonderful grower’s champagne (l’ouverture premier cru by Frederic Savart) that I brought for the occasion (after checking the establishment allowed it and charged a corkage fee) I shall return for more!

This is a fantastic place to eat if you’re looking for something a little special in Beaujolais country. The chef offers a very well-thought-out three, four, or five-course menu, with some delightful amuse-bouches along the way. The owner is originally from Chile, and you’ll find subtle touches of that heritage in the dishes, which makes the experience even more unique. Everything was beautifully cooked and presented, the service was excellent, and the wines they’ve selected are of very high quality. The restaurant sits in a small village square and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming rather than formal, which makes it a perfect spot to enjoy great food without pretension. If you’re exploring Brouilly, I’d recommend heading up to the nearby mount for the view and then stopping here on the way down – it’s the perfect finish to the outing!

Super lunch in the square at St Lager at the foot of Mont brouilly in the shade of the plane trees. Wonderful aubergine mousse, smoked butter, slow cooked pork belly and chocolate fondant with molten middle. Choose your own wine in their cave- we had an unusual refreshing blend of gamay and Chardonnay. Aurelien at Semita tours kindly booked ahead for us- recommended with reservations.
