The Golden Potato (as its name translates) is more of a local Gasthof than a standard-type international hotel, and is a charming place to stay. This was the second time we stayed here (last time being in 2006) and it was still just as good. The room was very spacious, my husband and I stayed in a double with a gallery leading to another two beds on a mezzanine. The room was very light and a good size, simply decorated with a lot of natural wood giving a warm feel. Plenty of towels and good supply of hot water for the shower. The breakfast was the usual Continental style of rolls and cheese, meats, pates; boiled eggs also provided and a steady supply of very good coffee.||||We were a group of 12 but as most of us did not want to share rooms, half of the group stayed in another village nearby but joined us each night for the evening meal at the Goldenen Kartoffel. (Had people been willing to share we could all have been accommodated here as a lot of the rooms have extra beds on mezzanine floors.) We were looked after very well, and the staff were very patient with a dozen Britons who only spoke limited German! The meals were very good quality with generous portions; as is common in this part of the world the emphasis was on meat although there were also salad options, the lamb kebab cooked with Mediterranean roasted veggies and feta cheese was especially good. As it was springtime there was also an asparagus menu which was excellent. ||||Our group was staying over the Easter weekend; no special touches at breakfast but at the evening meal we were presented with complimentary Easter hot punch: I have no idea what was in it other than egg liqueur and probably some other spirits as well- it was very very nice indeed! ||||Credit cards are now accepted, always handy when travelling.||||A very nice place to stay which I...

Read moreRecently visited Germany to visit friends and relatives in Leipzig and Berlin. Stayed at big corporate hotel in Leipzig (Marriott) at £220+ a night. Not a good experience.||Then stayed at The Golden Potato in Protzel (just outside Berlin). Price was about £50 a night. Room was split level affair - lower area with sofa, chairs work areas etc; upper area used for sleeping. Air conditioned (fully working compared with Marriott where it wasnt!). Quiet.||Room clean, tidy - natural wood everywhere.||Hotel incoporates a restuarant - excellant german food and german beer. Also incorporates bakery on premises. Fresh bread baked most days (except Monday).||Only minor caveats are that they dont accept credit cards and english is limited - but we're in Germany so learn German! (at least a little)||Highly...
