My previous experience of eating out in Germany has not been memorable, but there is really fine dining here. Every meal was cooked to perfection, and a test of a restaurant is it's ability of offer fish, especially, cooked just right. I stayed 5 nights while seeking some quiet time and attending Mother Meera's Darshan (the venue for the latter is only a half hour walk up a steep hill behind the hotel). I had a lovely cozy room overlooking the river and slept well every night. I was wary about the nearby railway which delivered me here from Limburg (Balduinstein station is only 100 metres down the road) but it's not intrusive at all. I found the whole village and surroundings beautiful, peaceful and quiet...lovely walks in the forest and by the river al around. My room was spotlessly clean, as was the whole hotel, and the staff were universally kind and helpful (especially with my special dietary needs) even when obviously very busy - which the popular restaurant can be. the only addition would have been a kettle in the room, but the staff offered me a flask of hot water in the evening which was fine for my early morning cuppa as soon as I awake (always very early). Breakfast was a continental one with lots of choices, provision for special diets if you ask and eggs any style cooked if wished other than the...

Read moreI wasn't expecting much when I booked a night's stay in this quaint and picturesque resort hamlet. What a surprise. The hotel/inn has been run by the same family for seven generations, since 1827, and the care and diligence of that legacy shows. The rooms were simple but beautifully appointed. Our double on the third floor looked out over the Lahn river and the gingerbread houses on its opposite side. Beds were warm and comfortable. Room had a minibar with chocolates and drinks (which we did not use). Great shower. Big TV. But the best treat was the included breakfast: perhaps the best I've ever had. A sumptuous spread of breads, sweet rolls, meats, cheeses, musli, yoghurt. fine teas and coffee, amazing herbed eggs cooked to order. We could have feasted all day. The hotel also offers fine dining of Michilen star quality at what I consider a reasonable price for such preparations: approx 30 euros per person for main meal, dessert (DO NOT miss the desserts!) and water. The only negative was the lack of an elevator or ramps. If you're lugging large bags and you don't happen to have a sherpa handy, this could...
