My wife and I began hiking from Freiburg up through the actual ungroomed forest paths until we reached some of the more groomed paths that lead you all over the area. (We'd been on some of those the day earlier when we climbed up to the Schlossburgturn) From there we walked for a long time through the forest paths, which on its own, was absolutely beautiful. But if going all the way to the Waldrestaurant St. Ottilien, be prepared for a hike. I think it was around 5.5 kms to get there, but it was VERY worth it. The restaurant does have indoor seating, but if the weather is good, sit on the large patio under the giant, lanterned tree - it felt a little like we were amongst the elven cities from LOTR. And the food was amazing... we had a local red wine, I only got (a giant plate of) fries, but my wife had an amazing wurstsalat with fried potato. All of it was amazing and was a fantastic way to break up the total 11km trip. The food, the views, the staff - all of it was a true German...

The landlord overheard me reading a bad review I’d written of some place to my tablemates and jokingly asked me not to write stuff like that about his place. Not to worry. The Waldrestaurant St Ottillen is totally worthy of the praise you can read in other reviews here. The food is delicious and seasonal and the portions are generous, the environmental touch (a dish with a supplement for an ecological charity) is cute and unique. Service is brisk but kind and attentive and on a hot summer day, under the spreading chestnut tree in the dappled shade, one feels like this is how they will cater in Heaven. And these people, who offer their hospitality beside a holy place (the lovely chapel of St Ottilia and its holy grotto complete with healing spring) are totally up to this great...

Just a beautiful experience walking through the woods with lovely birds chimes, beautiful flowers blooms and the green trees tall trees was a dream come through. And the best part was having a mouth watering food up in the woods with such a beautiful scenery. I loved it to the max. It’s really worth the trip there. A friend recommended the veggie burger but I had the lentils curry and I absolutely loved it. It took me 1hr and 20mins to get there from the Stadtgarten through the hiking route and it was just magical. And not to forget this place is over 500 years old. Huuu yes please...

Great place in the middle of the woods having walked there from Freiburg in an hour and a half. Had a refreshing dark wheat beer along with a Flammkuchen (extremely thin pizza base top with cheeses and onion). Sat outside on the terrace in the sunshine, best to get there close to opening time as it was very popular and filled quickly.
