Schilling am Bahnhof — Restaurant in Gemeindeverwaltungsverband Holzgerlingen

A friend and I went to a place we visited during COVID-19. Sadly, I was told that the original restaurant shut down during the pandemic. However, it was bought, renovated, and is now back open as a new one offering a completely different menu. I was quite excited to give it a try. The renovations look great and gave it a much lighter atmosphere as I recall it being rather dark before. For appetizers, my friend ordered a salad with mushrooms while I went with the soup of the day, potato soup. My friend's salad came out, but nothing for me. I waited, but after ten minutes, I called over our young waiter, who seemed clueless. He went back to check and informed me that the potato soup was finished. I then inquired about the tomato soup. He came back once more and said they were out of that too. It was early on a Friday evening so to be out of both soups is ridiculous. I felt like I was on Seinfeld being told, "no soup for you!" A young waitress came by to apologize and actually seemed to care. Then we waited forever for our mains when the table next to us received their dishes promptly. They were seated five minutes before us. Finally, they came. My friend had the Argentinian steak with herb butter. I ordered the salmon with a side of spinach and spaetzle with gravy. Overall, the food was very good, but the service was lacking, the food was quite good. I hope to give it another chance thanks to the waitress that was polite...

After a long bike ride with my family we did not feel like cooking dinner. We stopped by here on a whim. The menus are German and English. I order the steak and fries. Let me tell you this is the best steak I had in my 4 years in Germany. The skin had that nice crisp and the inside was medium it was perfect. What I would have liked to have instead of the fries was maybe mashed potatoes or parsnip purée with seasonal vegetables. My wife had the Surf and Turf. While the steak again was great the turf consisted of 2 pieces of shrimp and thyme potatoes. The two pieces of shrimp was a disappointment and loads of potatoes was a bit over.

However I want to highlight the steak was worth the price and the staff spoke great English and were pleased to hear that I liked the steak and relayed the message...

Ich fange mit dem Positiven an: Wunderschönes Ambiente, das an ein kleines Frühstücksrestaurant in Cambridge erinnert. Ausgewogene Tischgrößen und sehr durchdachte Verteilung. Egal, ob zuzweit oder in mittelgroßen Gruppen, man findet meist einen passenden Tisch und fühlt sich dort dann auch nicht belauscht, da immer genug Abstand zwischen dem Tischen ist.

Nun zum Negativen: Als Stammkunden gingen wir seit nunmehr als 1 1/2 Jahren regelmäßig zum Frühstücken in das Café Schilling. Dass die Servicezeit abundzu, vorallem an hochfrequentierten Tagen sehr hoch sein kann, war uns stets bewusst und das nahmen wir immer sehr gerne in Kauf, da es sich für das leckere Frühstück immer gelohnt hatte. Nur dieses Mal (montags) wurden wir erst 15 Minuten nicht beachtet, bevor wir eine Bestellung aufgeben durften. Das Paar am Tisch neben uns wurde in dieser Zeit 2 Mal bedient. Nach der Bestellung erhielten wir recht rasch unseren Kaffee. Dann brauchte es 42 Minuten, bis wir unser -unaufwendiges- Frühstück erhielten. Unser Kaffee hatte natürlich bereits Raumtemperatur und auf freundliches Feedback auf diesen Zustand kam von der Bedienung nur ein "nächstes mal sagt, wenn ihr alles zusammen wollt." Keine kleine Entschuldigung, und weg war sie. Das kleine Butterstück auf meinem Teller war bereits flüssig, das Brot schmeckte wie vom Vortag, die kleine Salatgarnitur auf dem Teller meiner Freundin war welk, der Käse fast ungenießlich, die Marmelade fast tiefgefroren (wie geht das?), der Frischkäse flockig. Immerhin war mein Omelett, das auch der Grund der Kellnerin war, weshalb es so lang gedauert hatte so lecker wie gewohnt. Wieder aber keine Entschuldigung, kein "Sorry", obwohl andere Gäste, die nach uns kamen, schon gegessen hatten. Am Ende seufzte die Kellnerin sogar laut, als ich mit Karte zahlen wollte. Wir gingen sehr enttäuscht. Trotz der langen Zeit, die wir schon das Café Schilling besucht hatten, möchte ich nicht mehr so ein Service und eine solche Qualität der Speisen in dieser Preiskategorie erleben. Stammkunden verlieren scheint diesem Lokal recht...
