It is a delight to be able to review this one-of-a-kind country hotel that sits on farmland on rolling hills yet is an easy fifteen minute drive from Passau's Altstadt. When we drove up to the hotel for the first time, we immediately knew we had chosen something special. A half dozen healthy-looking cows looked up at us from their pasture several feet from where our car was parked. The building is a beautiful, heritage-type property; the restoration of a very old farm was completed with a great deal of respect for craftsmanship. Everywhere there are lovely, tasteful details---whether in wood, stone, or textiles.||||We were greeted in a friendly manner by a member of the family who explained everything in very clear English. We were directed to our room, though we were sure to reserve for dinner before making our way to our room. [It was a stellar review on a highly-regarded culinary site that had initially led to our booking at this hotel.]||||We made our way to our room, noticing the classic modern art, framed posters in the hallways. We were pleased with every aspect of the room, from the comfortable bed and pillows to the updated bathroom, well-kept wooden floor, and balcony overlooking the beautifully designed courtyard. ||||We had spied an herb garden when we arrived, and as I'd read such positive things about the restaurant, I had high hopes for breakfast. What a repast! The setting was just lovely, simple yet sophisticated. My husband pronounced the coffee excellent, and I was happy with the tea selection. The breakfast choices included top-notch whole-grain and white breads and rolls, several tasty cheeses, excellent ham and wursts, unflavored and fruit yogurt, cereals and grains, eggs, spreads from Frischkaese, cut melon, pineapple, nectarines, apples, sour cherries, preserves.....In short, something for everyone, and all of the highest quality!||||Our hosts could not have been more helpful. Alois, the chef and innkeeper, made helpful recommendations regarding things to see in the beautiful city of Passau, where to have the most authentic cakes, what route to follow etc. Our request for extra pillows was barely made when pillows arrived at our door. I had a problem with my cell phone/data plan and was becoming frustrated about my inability to call my provider in the U.S. Despite the fact that he'd hardly had a free moment since cooking for the restaurant's guests, the host patiently placed the call for me.||||If I were planning a trip to Bavaria, I would definitely include Passau on my itinerary. And the first thing I would do would be to book directly with the hotel, perhaps arranging for half-board. This hotel does it all the way it should be done but rarely is. Top...

Read moreThis hotel really has it all! Especially if your looking for peace and quiet in a charming country hotel in the midst of pastures and the Bavarian forest. The hotel is run by the friendly Ertl family. The son is a very talentend chef while his mother runs the hotel. Partly a working farm (run by father Ertl), the hotel is situated in an ancient building with a truly idyllic courtyard with pots of white geraniums and herbs near a murmuring well. You can dine around simple tables with checkered tablecloths under the fruit trees. Inside, the old diningroom has antique tables decorated with wild flowers. The most amazing aspect of the hotel is that it succesfully combines authentic, traditional Bavarian country style (in the best sense) with very tasteful modern design. In the main building there are mostly rather traditional 'komfortzimmer' which are a tat old-fashioned with pine furniture and turquoise accents. Really special are the the three brand new (2006) minimalist 'naturstuben' which are state of the art, splitlevel suites very beautifully made of light oak. The bathrooms are equally modern, well equipped and very clean! All is done in the best of taste, modern design but totally unpretentious and in tune with the local traditions. In the modern building next door there are more modern suites, with a small kitchen (not that you need that). The hotel was ideal (we were travelling with our two-year old daughter) for children, for making long walks and bicycle tours. There are lots of natural lakes close by for swimming. Excellent meals, loads of atmosphere, gracious hosts, lovely views... what more do you want? Highly recommended! A rare gem in this part...
