This hotel is conveniently situated close to the Autobahn 9 between Nuremberg and Munich. The Altmuehltal is a pleasant area. ||We booked to arrive on a Tuesday which is the restaurant's "ruhetag" i.e. closed day although the website at the time of booking did not mention it. When we arrived the whole place was locked up with no indication as to how we were to proceed. We gained access after telephoning and waiting some time.||The bedroom had been recently refurbished with a lot of emphasis on "style". The bed linen had the hotel's name emblazoned all over it. You have to treat the bedside lights with caution. They are on flexible stalks and when they have been on for some time the end nearest the bulb becomes exceedingly hot and to move them means that you must only grip the other end otherwise you will get burnt. Also care must be taken not to allow the bed linen anywhere near the lamps when switched on. The view from the window was not inspiring being of a large factory.||The bathroom had also been refurbished but by someone with no clue whatsoever. There was only one small towel rail so that if you had showered there was no space to hang the towels up to dry. The mirror had seen better days - cracked in one corner and wth the silver flaking off. The shower head was small and attached to the wall right in the corner making it very difficult to stand under it. This was made worse in that the soap dispenser was situated in the same corner. As you tried to shower you were constantly hitting it. Not only that, it was empty! Fascinating was the hair drier. It was attached to the wall in a rest. The flex from the drier led to the rest. Another flex came out of the rest and had to be plugged into the socket. The problem was that the flex did not stretch to the socket. The rest could not be moved therefore the drier was simply collecting dust.||As we had had a long drive the previous day but a relatively short one on this day we were one of the last down to breakfast. We found that there was hardly any food left in the buffet. Some items should have been topped up but the person supposedly in charge was more interested in eating her breakfast and reading the paper than looking after the guests' needs. We had to virtually stand over her to produce some fruit juice, and some glasses and various item of crockery.||Given that the hotel's position near a factory is not ideal it really is important that it looks after its guests. Simply having a make-over of the rooms by a style guru is not enough. Also a short distance away in the town of Kipfenberg itself there are number of hotels worth considering and plenty of...
Read moreWe stayed at this excellent family run hotel for 4 nights and felt so welcome. It's just outside Kipfenburg but really easy drives to Eichstatt, Neuberg an der Donau, Kelheim, Ingolstadt, Riedenburg and Beilngries. Martin's English is excellent and the hotel has a menu in English. Be prepared for exceptional cuisine. We had several items which didn't appear on the menu such as roast deer and an dry-aged steak but all the food was well cooked & interesting. My favourite was deer meatballs in an exquisite wild mushroom sauce. Breakfast offered a choice of 9 teas, good coffee and many food items sourced locally. Eggs are cooked fresh. Room was spacious and we had a nice balcony for...
