If you find yourself spending time in and around Wurzburg and are in the mood for something typical German, but special if you are not familiar with German-style inns, then this is the place. The walled town of Sulzfeld is sweet and cosy any time of the year and the Main River is just outside the wall across a road. This is prime Franconian wine country but the inn serves delicious Franconian beer as well. Lovely relaxing countryside. Zum Stern is a perfect combination of dining and overnighting, where you can eat delicious, hearty local specialties and observe the packed inn full of local guests enjoying a "Stammtisch" or round of drinks as the staff bring out plate after plate of steaming food. Once you have had your fill of food and drink, simply head upstairs to your welcoming room. The inn was founded in 1887 and the 25 rooms are rather simple in terms of decoration but beds are comfortable and range up to EUR 70 for a double. You might like as if you were staying at your grandparent's place and stepping back in time. A nice German breakfast is included in the price and the staff is very friendly and helpful. I have been often to the Steigerwald and Wurzburg area and this was a recent find, which I am happy to share...

Read moreThe rooms are what you would expect in a small country inn, very clean and well designed so they are quiet. Some of the larger rooms for couples are quite romantic and the smaller rooms for singles, as I am this trip, are very acceptable.||The hosts are wonderful and the owner-manager (Bernd who is also chef of the restaurant) and some of the staff speak English. This is my fourth or fifth time here over the past almost 20 years and I am remembered along with my eccentricities - they serve me herring (matjes) in an apple horseradish sauce for breakfast! The usual breakfast selection is varied and tasty.||A wonderful home environment in a picturesque medieval...
