My friend and I stayed at Gasthaus Peter for three nights in July. It is in the middle of Horlach village, near Pegnitz. This is family run accommodation and has recently been renovated and as a result the rooms were spotless and all the furniture and fittings seem to be new. I was in a single room and there was ample storage space. My friend was in a double room and she had loads of space also. There is satalite TV, all German language of course except for CNN and a couple of music channels. The en-suite bathroom also has a hairdryer and shaver socket, no bath though, only a shower. Some family rooms seem to have a balcony looking over the village. Breakfast in the morning was good and consisted of 5 or 6 different breads (usually still warm), jams, 3 different types of cereal, yoghurt, tea, coffee, orange juice, fresh fruit, hams, cheeses and eggs. This accommodation also has a bar and restaurant area. A small beer is only 1.20 euro and main courses (mostly pork) between 6 and 9 euro. The family rear their own pigs for the restaurant kitchen which apparently is quite unusual in Germany as most meat is bought in. We were told by friends that as a result, people come for miles to eat the home-reared pork. We ate once in the restaurant and it was quite good, big portions. Horlach is a very peaceful village with many forest walks right on the doorstep and approx 3km from Pegnitz which is a lot bigger. It is approx 55 - 60km from Nurnburg which is worth a day's visit. The family who run the hotel are extremly friendly and helpful and English is well spoken. The weather was glorious when we were there, between 30 and 35 degrees C. Take bite spray though - horse flies were biting through the day and mozzies in the evening. In all, this is an excellent place to stay to sample what Germany and life in the country is really like. The accommodation was booked for us by a friend living in Pegnitz and we can highly...
Read moreThree weeks in Germany, and this was the best place . . . by far. Robert and everyone are really friendly, helpful people (I had a sensor go off in my rental car, to check the oil, and Robert actually insisted on helping me). The food is incredible. It draws local crowds. The lodging, perfect. The room was delightful, super clean (and cleaned every day); they even arranged to do my laundry. All prices were exceedingly reasonable (breakfast was less than half of what I usually paid). This is the reason to visit small town Germany! A local befriended me (I was traveling solo), and even gave me a wonderful history tour of Pegnitz. || Fellow Americans: visit here. It is a great base for regional trips. Bayreuth is wonderful (tour the old, smaller opera house); Nuremburg, don't miss Bamburg (beautiful), and go Flossenburg (yes, a little dark and sombering, but also beautiful). I was here for four nights - just the right...
