Positive: Located in a small village with clean and cozy rooms with good beds. Rooms were relatively large as well. Some noise at night, mostly from the restaurant kitchen clean up. Tea and instant coffee as well as sparkling water was included in the price. Breakfast was simple but tasty and with friendly service.. Negative: When we arrived at 8, the restaurant was very busy and fully booked. We asked if we could eat, after the waiter ensured us that we could take it easy and freshen up and then order food later to eat in our rooms. However when we went down at 21.05, we were told that the kitchen had already closed and that he had mentioned it to us (all 4 of us did not recall hearing that). Not the biggest deal, but we were a little hungry at night because of it. It would've been great if he hadn't persisted that he had told us about the kitchen closing early though... The kitchen closing at 21.00 does seem to be a common thing in the Black Forest...
Read moreWe recently had the pleasure of discovering the Gasthaus Hirschen on a week long trip through the Black Forest region of Germany.
This family run hotel offers clean modern accommodation with superb views of the surrounding countryside and in the distance the alps.
The real surprise was the restaurant, which we later discovered is well known in the area as one of the best. The food is simply delicious and the staff just so friendly and welcoming. They have some excellent beers on tap also!
Parking is safe and right outside the hotel in its own car park. The beautiful medieval town of Villingen-Schwenningen is just 8km away and a bus stop right outside the hotel means you can hop on a bus and be there in 15 mins. Perfect if you fancy a night out on the town without having to take the car.
We loved this hotel, and heartily...

Check-in at the restaurant on the ground floor. Charming restaurant with good food and friendly staff. The restaurant named XXL serves enormous sized hamburgers and huge beer glasses. Ok breakfast with eggs, scrambled eggs, cold cuts and more. Large clean room on third floor with balcony, no elevator. Very quiet. Comfortable beds but awful pillows. No bath towels in our room. We could have asked for them but the hand towels were big enough to use. Large bathroom with shower and lots if counter space for toilettries. Outlets by the bed...
