I was hoping to find some good Mexican food like in the states because of the good reviews, but If you're looking for real Tex-Mex food, either make it yourself or look somewhere else.
Two stars for the excellent sauces and dips, and the friendly service. The salsa is very good, the cheese sauce is exactly how you'd imagine a nacho cheese sauce to taste, the guacamole is good but not great, and you can't do much wrong with sour cream. Sadly you don't get very much sauce, but they are very good. It baffles me how there can be such a gap in quality between the sauces and the rest of the food.
The tortilla chips are, or rather were at some point, freshly made by frying a cut up tortilla. The chips that were served were however cold, a little soggy (hardly any crunch), and tasted more of oil than of tortilla. The saving grace for these chips were the sauces, but there's only so much a sauce can do.
The burritos are more like a taquito or enchilada without the sauce than a burrito (actually the enchilada here is round instead of rolled?). The tortilla also comes fried for some reason, and you get two, although they are pretty small compared to what you'd usually expect a burrito to be, hence the comparison to a taquito. Actually all the Tex-Mex things (taco, burrito, enchilada, quesadilla) come served in these oily, fried tortillas that just don't taste very good, nor remind me of Tex-Mex to be honest.
The fillings taste rather bland, which I guess is to cater to the German taste, but you'd be hard pressed to compare this to Mexican or Tex-Mex food. Not many spices are used, at least not in large quantities, and none of the food is even a tiny bit spicy. The chili tastes like the ground beef is pork or partially pork, although it should be 100% beef, and it tastes more like a soup made with hamburger helper than chili. The rice is actually pretty good, just too salty, but that might just have been a slip up or something.
The service is very friendly although they seem a bit inexperienced, but no big deal. The entire larger dining area is carpeted which is kind of gross.
In summary, if you're expecting a Tex-Mex dining experience similar to what you'd get in the USA or Mexico, and you want some tacos, burritos, etc., you'll probably be disappointed. Maybe their other offerings are better (burgers, steaks), but that's not what I'd want to get at a...
Read moreThis is by far the best Mexican restaurant in Europe. The food is autentic, fantastic and best of all, well prepared and served with passion.
We stayed in Kenzingen only for convinience, and found CHACO TEX MEX by pure chance. We were a little skeptical at first as the restaurant is situated in a secluted part of Kenzingen in a light industrial Area. Entering the restaurant, it looked like a regular bar with a large room decorated in mexican style next to it.
However the waitress greeting us was Nice and quickly found a table for us (we were 8 persons) and told us (in german) about the food. She even recommended different dishes and drinks that fitted nicely to our wishes.
We waited a little for the food but drinks came straight away.
We were totally blown away by the quality and taste of the food. The portions were fitting sizes and it was easy to taste that the food was made with fresh materials and a portion of love for Mexican food.
On a normal tuesday an wensday (yes, we went there TWICE. Thats how good it was) there were plenty of locals eating at CHACO TEX MEX and the atmosphere was lose and cozy. We meet both waitress’ and the chef, and they were all Nice and forthcoming.
If you are ever staying in the Kenzingen/Freiburg/Rust Area CHACO TEX MEX is a must visit for dinner.
Only Small negativ thing to say is that the a’la carte restaurant is only open monday to thursday, as the owners are concentrating on closed parties in the weekends. But thats okay, as the prices is fair for going out to eat on a normal week day.
All the best...
