A small playground for children, traditional roast lamb on the spit at midday, nice clean rooms with balconies, idyllic mountain setting, stars at night -- I could go on...||We left Athens, went to Mycenae in the morning and arrived at Xani Zemenou in the evening with no stress. It turned out to be a perfect place from where to explore this region. It was half the price of any comparable hotel I've ever stayed in in Arachova, including the extra for breakfast (worth it). You are far from the crowds in Delphi (the modern town) while only 20 minutes away from the archeological site of Delphi. The family that owns this hotel/tavern and the people that help run it are very attentive, hospitable, warm and generous. Their English is always enough to get by, and their charming personalities shine through any lack of fluency. My shower was basic (in one of the cheaper rooms), but the room was clean with a nice balcony overlooking a chapel across the street in an idyllic mountain landscape.||||In this mountainous region of Parnassus, there is a small chapel across the road, a parking lot in front, ground to run on for children, otherwise you are surrounded by trees, shrub, flowers and birds. It is on the main road to Arachova and Delphi, but set back from it. There is no traffic late in the day and silence reigns at night. If you want the excitement of a large town or a larger choice of restaurants, Arachova is just 10 minutes away by car. That said Xani Zemenou (or Xani Zemenos) serves very good food in the afternoon and their roast lamb is a specialty. It's best to reserve in advance though as the lamb goes quick. ||||One further note:||Mycenae (Mykines) was 3 hours away, but it is less than 2 hours from Athens, it was well worth the longer drive the first day we left Athens to be able to stay 3 nights in the same hotel. It was not only a great alternative to Delphi,or Arachova, it was also a welcome alternative to...

Read moreWe ate the restaurant on our way back from a day trip from Athens to Delphi. There are a number of "taverna" on the road back (or to) Deplhi from Athens and we chose this one because there were no tour buses outside so we felt that it would not be too commercial. The restaurant has table outside under a give of trees and is cool but with a view of the mountains in front. ||||The food was excellent and some of the best that we had in Greece. We started off with grilled cheese, which was delicious. For the main course, we had the mixed grill for two, which cam with French fires and consisted of sausages, and lamb and was superbly cooked in their on-site grill. It was large enough for three people with normal appetites. We accompanied this with the mixed salad which came with fresh vegetables and two big slabs of feta cheese and was delicious.||||The only slight drawback was the wine, which was a rose rather ta a red wine. Overall an ideal place to stop off for lunch on a day...
