The Platanos taverna has been a family run business for more than 20 years. The founders son, Themis, not only took over but took the concept to a totally new level. I don't review places unless I feel very strongly about them. My experience at Platanos is one of my top 3, ever. Themi and his crew, have an amazing knowledge of the traditional delicacies of the area as well as a very healthy attitude towards new techniques and that subtle touch of an elevated sense of the new. With fresh, local, top quality products, cornerstone of what you'd consider gourmet, Themis delivers a truly remarkable dining experience. I had planed to return to Athens from a different route but decided to return to Platanos for what turned out to be an even better experience than the first. I will not bore you with detailed descriptions, words fail me. If my word has any worth, go...just go! If you're somewhere near, drop everything and go, give Themi an outline of what you like and he'll take care of you like only a man who loves his work will. My beloved partner Dimitra, wants to add, οι γεύσεις είναι ατοφιες και παραμένουν ακόμη κι όταν ο Θέμης τις πειράζει. Simply magic! Θέμη,...
Read moreThe place is a hidden gem. It recently updated their menu with many interesting options: from the simplest options to haute cuisine, meat they mature on their own, rare cheeses and a matching wine list. Great desserts too. Everything is very well taken care of, the salads are unique and tasteful, the appetisers are well balanced and complicated. The main dishes are mainly of local products. The place provides for a reason to visit the area. We tried different options of steaks, all rightly roasted. The mushroom tart, the lamb and the asparagus. For the end we had the tiramisu and 3 kinds of cheese. We chose to order wines by the glass, so to change for every dish and dessert. The service was excellent, the waiters knew all the options of food and wines and explained everything. By the way, the restaurant is in a great area under long trees by the river, suitable for every season. It is highly recommended, in fact is a super...
Read moreHad a dinner for two. The appetizer was good(salad with sweet potatoes and beetroot) For the meat, the waiter took us to the aged meet fridge, we have selected the one we liked, a 900g porterhouse, but no one took it out the fridge, and we got a completely different piece of meat, dry and awful. Practically not eatable.(we have asked it medium...) After complaining, the waiter was willing to give us a 'black angus' steak, third the size...which was full of artifitial tenderize (chemical softeners which is identified by the very salty taste and specific greasy glaze you can't miss) To sum it up, we were charged for the big porterhouse we didn't eat (and the waiter took off our table) . we asked the waiter to add 10% service, but he "exidentally" added 15%. Very...
