Read moreA hidden gem in the Cretan hills — and one of my favorite places to bring visitors.
I first stumbled upon Mama Mio by accident last year, when a wrong turn led me high above Elounda to a tiny spot clinging to the edge of a gorge. And I’ve been coming back ever since.
George, the owner, honors his mother’s legacy with authentic mezés served in what he calls a “Mezestaurant” — a casual spot where small plates, big flavors, and good stories come together. The traditional Cretan dishes that make you pause and savor every bite. The ingredients are always fresh, the flavors bold but comforting, and the hospitality warm and genuine.
The decor is delightfully kitschy, filled with vintage charm and stories on every wall. There’s even a wooden pole outside with hand-painted signs pointing to cities around the world — a quirky photo spot that always makes me smile. Don't miss the high heels on the ceiling.
But the real magic? The view. You’re perched above the mountains, with sweeping vistas that make any visit feel like a little secret you’ve been let in on.
If you're anywhere near Elounda or Agios Nikolaos — take the detour. Trust me. This is the kind of place that becomes a must-stop every time you return to Crete. 📸 I’ve also shared some more of the magic of Mama Mio — from the mezés to the mountain views — on my Facebook (@sherry.kallergis) and Instagram (@MidlifeMuseStudio), if you'd like a peek...
Read moreI can totally recommend George and the entire Mamamio team. Whether it’s catering for a retreat, a small coffee break, a cozy family dinner, or a party with friends – George is the place to go. Mamamio is the place to be. ALWAYS!
The atmosphere, the view, all the homemade, traditional Greek food are simply fantastic. But it’s not just Greek food on the menu at this truly heartwarming place. There are also a few Jordanian dishes that I can warmly recommend to every guest. These should be ordered at least a day in advance, as they require a bit more preparation time.
During the summer months, there is live music every Sunday at Mamma Mio! And that is definitely an experience not to be missed for anyone visiting Crete. If you get the chance to go to George’s Mamma Mio! on a Sunday evening, make a reservation, go, and enjoy the show. It’s simply wonderful. Pure magic!
Nowhere else will you be welcomed with such warmth and heartfelt hospitality as up there on the mountain near Pines.
