Taverna Rousolakos — Restaurant in Municipality of Agios Vasileios

Taverna Rousolakos was one of the most enjoyable stops during our 9-day vacation in Crete, a family-run taverna offering authentic Greek cuisine at honest prices.

We first found it by chance while heading to Preveli Beach after visiting the Kourtaliotiko Waterfall. The taverna is right next to the large parking area above the beach, with a beautiful view of the ocean and the local shepherd’s fields. The beach itself is just a short 10–15 minute walk down a rocky stone path close to the taverna.

The owner, has to be the highlight of this charming place. With 20+ years of experience, he clearly loves what he does. Being a great host he told us many stories and even shared a few drinks with us. The food on the menu here is comforting, hearty and made freshly with daily dishes offered depending on availability of ingredients. We had such a great time we came back two more times — despite staying in Hersonissos, two hours away. His little son made us laugh when he ran off with my friend’s wallet (it was so cute). When we forgot a ring at the table, the owner saved it for us to pick up the next day — just a genuinely kind and warm person.

WOULDN’T RECOMMEND – TOTAL RIP-OFF!

Honestly, the whole experience was a disaster – poor service, loud music, terrible atmosphere, and the food was the worst part. Portions were tiny for the price, and the taste wasn’t any better. Feels like one of those places set up to trick tourists.

I came in hoping for a nice meal before a beach day, but left completely disappointed – and still hungry.

We ordered chicken souvlakis and it was awful: the chicken was dry and tasteless, like chewing cardboard, with just a few chips and a bit of salad thrown on the side for decoration.

Went there today craving gyros which was not on the menu. We were met by a lovely man who described every dish with so much heart and passion that we decided to give it a go. Hand on heart it was the best dish we've had during our stay in Crete 🩷. We ate red chicken with chips- everything was seasoned beautifully, full of flavour and cooked to perfection.
