Nobody likes to write a bad review, but in this case it's really necessary. 4.9 for this restaurant must feel like a slap in the face for so many places that actually really put hard work in to be good. For us, I can say that it was the worst experience after 1 month in Crete. First time we left most of food & drinks and didn't finish our meals.
First the okay parts: The owner is friendly and seems nice. The taste of the food is okay, some things like the salad seem quite good, main dishes that we had not so much.
Now the bad: Hygiene is important. Even more so during Corona times. First glimpse that something might be off waswe when we ordered water and got tap water with black undefined particles swimming in it. That put me on high alert, and what came confirmed it. Fresh Orange juice was not only delivered with re-usable plastic straws, but those straws looked horrible inside. See my picture. Would you wanna drink out of that? Dirt? Mold? Who knows... The cap with hole for the straws that came with it was rusty as well.
That's an incredible health hazard & simply not acceptable.
Meat ordered "medium" was delivered "well done" & to the owners defense, he asked us if he should make another one (we declined, I thought it better to have it really cooked trough).
Inside the restaurant it looks somewhat chaotic - birds close to food counter and half an office inside the restaurant.
The kitchen area does look clean though from what we saw.
I wanted to confront the owner while paying inside and not in front of other guests, but had to leave in a hurry due to our car being in the way of a truck.
So. I'd recommend the owner to really clean up his act & check for possible health concerns. This might not be comprehensive for the whole operation, and we felt not sick after eating what we did (but we also didn't suck trough those straws). But would I go again or recommend it to anyone?...

Lot of food is from the family farm and he should make more of this on menu. We ate early (6:30) so very quiet but that was no problem for us and all great. Nice little dessert and some great raki. He needs to offer coffee. Good place, try. Also...
Read moreTaverna is based on the opinions of the previous owner. The current owner, Michali, has no idea how to cook. He probably gets good tires from his family and friends. I ordered lamb chops, I got some burnt leftovers in a very small quantity, there was a maximum of 150 grams of meat, the price was 10 Euro! Menu without prices. The owner says prices change weekly due to the war in Ukraine! and he has the highest quality. Avoid this place.
