This was my biggest disappointment during the summer. We visited on a windy night in August, after 15th and the place was not full.
The atmosphere is decent, but it is in the middle of nowhere, meaning that you require a car or tax (10 euros each way) to get there.
The real issue was that the food was not great (note that the main options are lamb ane goat for meat), and by that I even mean greek standard dishes such as greek salad, melitzanosalata. The biggest fail was fried potatoes that were not fried enough meaning that the texture, colour and flavour was not ideal. To add salt to wound, when we complained about it, the waiter shrugged it off and said that we should find our waitress (who was also the owner of the restaurant and has left since). The goat with tomato sauce was decent but could not salvage an otherwise bad experience. Also prices are very reasonable.
Honestly, I am baffled by the number of raving reviews, and am not sure what happened to us, as the couple next to us (that we shared the taxi on the way back) also felt that the experience...

If you're feeling adventurous or if the weather allows it, I recommend walking all the way from the port to the old castle. Let the climb, with its gentle effort, make the reward that much sweeter.
Once there, you’ll be welcomed with open arms by Michaelis and his family, where you'll choose from a humble yet briliant menu. You must consider the goat, which all come from the family farm, and the Chalki pasta, made from scratch.
The food, while simple, is sublime and tastes like the love and dedication that this lovely family pours into their work.
Everything is organic, fresh, authentic.
And if you're lucky, you might find yourself sharing a shot of raki with one of the family members, exchanging stories, and learning more about the lives of these hard-working islanders.
I was moved by the profound connection I felt not just to the food, but to the land and people behind it.
If you seek a true taste of the soul of Chalki, this...
Read moreHow to describe this feeling... I've had maybe years to try something so authentic and traditional as the food in this place. So simple recipes but yet so amazing, it's like your grandma invited you to cook your favorite dish that you had long forgotten. The place it's not only the best tavern in Chalki, but maybe one of the best in the whole country. The only downside is that (if you don't have a car or moto) there is only one taxi that goes over there, so during high season you have to call and book a seat. You can also walk your way from the port but it's a 3 km uphill road. But at the end your effort will be rewarded. Definitely try the goat, tirokafteri and the handmade makarounes. Don't skip it, you...
