Kosmas Traditional Taverna — Restaurant in Municipality of Chersonissos

The food is exceptional!! I have been traveling to different parts of Greece ( 25 years) and it is really really good. Fresh ingredients are used, and the cookers are owners and lady’s “ yayas ( grandmothers)” so you might imagine how well cooked it is everything. A lot of local people eat there. We dine there every day unless the day ( Monday) they “try to rest a little “ and on that day we dine in an other place that it can’t compare at all . This traditional place doesn’t seem to live up to its reputation. The pork steak was particularly disappointing – it was the worst I’ve ever had. The rest of the plates were okay, but nothing special. There was no flavour, which is unusual for a Cretan traditional place.

Another thing that let us down was the service. On our first visit, we arrived without a reservation and found five empty tables. After settling into one, a lady asked if we had made a reservation, even though we hadn’t. She insisted that we couldn’t sit there anymore and had to leave. We turned up on a Sunday evening and further added to the stress of the staff - a party of eight, no reservation, four kids and at the end of a manic weekend rush. They accommodated us and it was much to our benefit. The restaurant is small and swamped with foliage so hard to spot but the inside is extremely atmospheric and traditional. Everyone had huge plates of food, everyone was talking (in Greek- we were the only tourists), and the meat and salads were excellent.
