Taverna Alekos — Restaurant in Municipality of Festos

Stumbled on this family restaurant run out of their own home. Only cash by the way but very affordable. Such a homey feel once you walk in with a beautiful garden view from the dining area. Service was very quick and friendly. We ordered the calamari and bolognese. I usually like my pasta al dente but the spaghetti was so flavorful. Almost like it was cooked in the sauce for a while. I could've ate the spaghetti by itself. Very reminiscent of your grandma cooking for you. Calamari was very fresh. Nice and crispy on the outside and moist on the inside with nice seasoning. Fries were crispy. We were even served free fruit before we left. Honeydew was not overly sweet. I usually don't enjoy it but this was very good. I love finding these middle of nowhere restaurants that really give you a feel of home cooking in the country, don't burn a hole in your wallet and surprise...

This is the third time and definitely not the last time that we’ll be visiting Alekos’ Taverna. It is our second visit to Crete and the food at Alekos’ is one of the reasons for our return! Recommended to us by a lovely local man four years ago, this family run Taverna has the best food in Crete! We love the aubergine starter and the stuffed peppers (not available at the moment, July and August, but will be available again in September!) The feta saganaki and oven baked feta are also delicious! For mains, the pork schnitzel, both plain and a la crème, are so good and the prawns (shrimps) are huge and delectable! There are many other meals to try which is why we’ll be back soon! This is not a bustling Taverna, it is set in the pretty garden of Alekos’ home. We wisited this place duri g our 1month stay on Crete.For your information to understand I'll write downstairs, we visit Crete from 2012 every year on spring and autumn and we know all the island from west to east.We found this taverna on google with very good recommendations. I'm sorry, but it was first time we found absolutely hostile owner,choleric and sanquinic.At last he even threatened physical assault !!!
