Food that makes you feel great. Enjoy original Cretan taste with all your senses. This is not the first time we ate at Mesostrato but it is always such an astonishing feeling to experience such quality in all aspects. That is why I do this review.

So, first of all, everything used , is fresh from the garden and livestock of Giorgos. From the tomatoes to lamp , from the cheese to the herbs and stakes. Secondly, you cannot go wrong with anything you choose. Still my favourites are always the home-made Cretan authentic-recipe dishes that you cannot easily find anywhere else. This time it was the the giant beans with herbs, apaki and sausages in the oven. Such a delicacy that i still remember it and smile. My boys had pork stake and they asked for another although they were full. Every time I do take the ntolmadakia that are equally tasty to my own grandmother's. That is the first memory I get when I savour them. Finally, I have to outline the amazing service, natural smiles and best value for money you can get overall.

In a nutshell, don't stop when you drive through Kandanos at Mesostrato. Go to Kandanos to experience Mesostrato. I truly believe this is the restaurant where you can feel and taste the original Cretan hospitality and cuisine.

Pure magic! Mesostrato is the heart of Crete!

I honestly have no words to fully capture the experience at Mesostrato. From the moment we arrived, we felt like we were being welcomed into someone’s home – warm smiles, genuine kindness, and care in every little detail.

And then the food… oh, the food! The stuffed zucchini blossoms were out of this world – light, crisp, flavourful, absolutely the best we’ve ever had. The kalitsounia were fresh and rich with taste, and the oven-baked giant beans were simply perfect – tender, aromatic, and comforting. As for the pork steaks – huge portions, perfectly grilled, juicy, and full of flavour.

Everything we tasted came from the family’s own farms – and you can truly taste the difference. This is real food, made with real love. Nothing pretentious – just pure, authentic, Cretan soul on a plate.

The atmosphere? Heart-warming. Friendly. Honest. It felt like sitting at the table with relatives in the village. Simple, beautiful, and full of heart. Mesostrato isn’t just a tavern – it’s an experience that stays with you.

If you ever find yourself near Kandanos, do not miss this place. It will fill you – not just with amazing food, but with joy and warmth.

Terrible, we were especially struck there to eat, we were completely ignored while only two other tables were occupied (Greeks) eventually they came to us and put bread on the table in a bowl of cutlery. We are small eaters and did not take bread. Partner wanted another beer during dinner, but he never came, asked if he had forgotten and yes, forgot. We asked for the bill that also mentioned bread, but we had not ordered or touched this. I asked the ministry how this was and they said yes, then you should have turned it down when it was put down. I really didn't care about the few euros, but about the way they do it. We had our own restaurant, with us everyone just got a basket of bread and butter on the table from the house.
