Rina's Taverna — Restaurant in Municipality of Karpathos

Writimg this review keeps me wondering whether service or food was worst at this restaurant. The waiter/owner was ridiculously rude with us, he warmly suggested the „specials” of the day and when we chose something different his comment was: „alright, if you want to wait a long time, no problem”!! I half raised my hand after ordering to attract his attention, as I wanted to change, one of my dishes but stopped without saying one word when I noticed he was talking to the guests at the next table. He probably saw me and briskly turned around saying very rudely: “Can’t you see I’m talking to someone else!!!?” At that stage, I wanted to get up and leave, but it was already late so we decided to stay and see if at least the food was any better than the service. All the dishes no matter whether meat or seafood were accompanied by some dull, cold, floppy and very dry french fries, which were unmistakably from the day before, and which they did not even try to make an effort to warm up! I did complain about it. They took the plate away and came back after a few seconds with exactly the same product except a few degrees warmer. The rest of the food was average to be generous. We left leaving more than half of our food in the plate. No doubt our worst experience in Karpathos and something that makes you wonder whether growing tourism in the last few years has possibly gone to...

We absolutely loved loved loved Rina’s taverna. We we’re staying nearby, therefore we kept coming back for lunch and dinners and never once left without a massive smile on our faces. :) The regular menu items are great, but if you want some highlights in your day, don’t be afraid to try the recommended daily special. I had the best musaka and lamb dishes of my life here. Truly superb. The tzatziki is like eating a delicious cloud. But it’s not just the food, it’s also the friendly atmosphere and lovely service. Siamo stati in due in questa taverna a gestione familiare, attirati dalle recensioni che elogiavano la cucina casereccia. L'esperienza è stata positiva solo a metà.

Abbiamo ordinato un piatto di mackarones: sicuramente artigianali, probabilmente preparati dalla cuoca, ma il sapore non mi ha convinto, mentre a mia moglie sono piaciuti. Abbiamo poi provato dei piccoli gamberetti fritti, una specialità locale: buona la materia prima, ma la porzione era scarsa e la frittura troppo unta.

Il piatto di alici fritte, invece, era fin troppo abbondante. Le alici (non sardine) però erano secche, con un odore forte e una frittura eccessivamente scura. Dopo averne assaggiate alcune , abbiamo deciso di lasciarlo.

A quel punto ho pensato che sarebbe stato meglio seguire i consigli del cameriere (forse anche il proprietario?) e ordinare uno dei piatti del giorno elencati quando ci siamo seduti. Ho preso quindi delle polpette al sugo con riso: un piatto semplice, da trattoria.

Abbiamo accompagnato il pasto con mezzo litro di vino bianco della casa. Il conto finale è stato di 50 €, in linea con altri locali dell’isola. Tuttavia, considerando la semplicità della cucina e il servizio molto spartano, mi aspettavo di spendere qualcosa in meno. Per lo stesso prezzo, sull’isola ho mangiato in posti più curati, con un servizio migliore e una qualità leggermente superiore.

Aggiungo, per onestà, che gli altri clienti sembravano soddisfatti, soprattutto chi aveva scelto i piatti del giorno. Personalmente però non...
