The Restaurant Cafe Meltemi can be found just outside Papadiana, south of the town of Kissamos (in the southwest of Crete). Some people will pass it on the way to the Chrisoskalistissa Monastery or the beach of Elafonissi, which are two main tourist attractions in the southwest of the island. Meltemi is the name of the wind that sometimes blows over the Greek islands, but that doesn't always have to be a bad thing. There is a red Illy coffee sign stuck to the building so this means the coffee is usually good. So we sit down and we order two cappuccinos with the waitress that has an expression on her face like her house has just burned down. And then she brings us two cups of nescafé (which isn't even coffee, it is chemical) with milk and sugar in it. Tasted like some very bad medicine you might obtain from your pharmacy in case you are ill.
So I get up to ask what happened, that I saw the Illy coffee sign, wanted a cappuccino and get a nescafé with sugar instead. The "cook" comes with a face like it is that time of the month and she starts giving me a whole lecture about cappuccino. It was what I had in my cup. And if I wanted an Illy cappuccino I should have ordered an "espresso cappuccino". According to her it was like that everywhere on the island. Well, I don't know where she has been the last ten years, but probably stuck on her mountain, because for me it was the first time it happened (with an Illy sign) and I order it almost every day. But the coffee is changed and we get an Illy "espresso" cappuccino with cold milk on the top. She definitely knows how to make a cup of coffee. Our verdict: the worst and most unfriendly place we...
Read moreWe have been to the restaurant for lunch on our way to Elafonissi Beach. We wanted to order Kebab (was not available), so we decided to go for the grillen chicken. After just 10 minutes we got the food, it was just a plain chicken breast and muddy french fries without nothing for 12 Euros. We tried to cut it with a normal knife, which was just not possible. The chicken was hard like a rubber. We have asked it this is normal, and they just told us you can have a sharp knife used for cutting raw beef. However, we tried but we were not able to eat the chicken. They also served some slices of bread also served in the table without ordering it. I took the bread with Olive oil which was a really good one basicslly. In the end we paid the whole food including the bread (3 €!) and they said nothing even when they saw the plate was still full with the chicken. And one other important thing, they have two big dogs, a brown and a black one. We had a small dog with us and the brown one was very agressive and I had to save our dog by jumping between. The dog just stopped once the guy from the service came out to order his dog back. Overall we had a good experience in Crete so far with our dog and food, but we cannot recommend this restaurant at all. There are so many other Restaurants coming along the way, so of you have the chance, just stop by...
Read moreWe loved this restaurant so much that we went twice during our week long holiday! The views are simply spectacular, we all enjoyed our meals ranging from a goat dish, a potato cheese dish, burgers, chicken souvlaki and spaghetti Bol/pesto. All the dishes were really tasty. At the end of the meal we were given Raki and some traditional sweet which was a lovely touch. As some of the other reviews have mentioned, we were left alone after our meal was brought out but that suited us just fine as most people wandered around the restaurant taking photos of the view and the sunset or trying out the hammock as it was a very relaxed atmosphere! The owners were just inside the building so it wasn’t a big deal to pop in and ask for the bill or anything else that we wanted, in fact it made a nice change that we could just sit there all evening not feeling obliged to pay up and leave or buy more drinks and food! The olive oil was lovely and is made by them, I wish I had bought some to take home. The owner also makes lots of different soaps, I bought some goats milk soap as little presents for people back home. Throughly...
