One of my best, best, best experience in Greece in the past 15 years of traveling in Greek islands! We’ve been last year in Crete and bumped Taverna Stormio on the way back from Elafonisi beach and impressed me so much that I wanted to come back to Crete again only for their kindness, authenticity, serene and peaceful location, real authentic delicious Cretan food. This year, same month of October, here I am again, driving every day for 1 hour, only to enjoy again their authentic and delicious food along with my children which never accept to have lunch anywhere else while in Crete. Thank you Ianis and your family for your kindness, delicious food and great authentic farm atmosphere. You should not miss this taverna and their food while in Crete, this will be an unforgettable experience! Don’t expect high class Michelin star rated restaurant, but expect to be impressed with simple and authentic Cretan dishes, delicious and full of flavor, cooked and served with love by Ianis’s family in an authentic and serene place. Also, very good sized portions and very decent prices compared to similar type of tavernas in Crete. For one’s worried about the prices, for example, for today’s lunch for 2 adults and 2 children 14 and 5 yo (we had Cretan salad, spinach and mizithra cheese pie, tzatziki, fried zucchini, chicken in red souce, lamb chops, makaroni with red souce, Greek burger, soft drinks, raki, carafe of wine and Cretan beer) for less than 60 euros! Well done, missing so much already this...
Read moreTaverna Stomio is everything you hope to find in a traditional Greek taverna: warm hospitality, delicious homemade food, and a genuine, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re visiting family rather than dining out.
From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted with sincere smiles and the kind of attentive service that only comes from people who truly care about what they do. The owners are incredibly friendly and generous—happy to chat, share stories, and recommend the best dishes of the day.
The food was simply outstanding. Every plate was prepared with fresh ingredients and traditional flavors. The grilled meats were perfectly cooked, juicy and full of taste. The homemade tzatziki was among the best we’ve ever had—creamy, garlicky, and refreshing. We also had perfectly fried zucchini, a rich and comforting moussaka, and a slow-cooked lamb dish that melted in the mouth.
You can tell that every recipe has been passed down through generations, made with pride and authenticity. The portions were generous, and we even received some complimentary desserts and a small drink to finish off the meal—a lovely gesture that made the whole experience even more special.
Taverna Stomio is not just a place to eat; it’s a place to feel at home. We left with full hearts and full stomachs, already looking forward to...

The experience of sitting there while different animals walked around was truly unique. ❤️However, afterwards I saw a dog that could barely keep its eyes open, its ribs showing – heartbreaking to witness. I wondered how this could be possible in a place with so many animals on display. In a nearby yard I also noticed four pedigree dogs, and I can only hope they won’t end up on the street as well. The thought of that starving, abandoned dog in the middle of so many others left me deeply saddened.🥺
I don’t mean this as an accusation, but more as an observation that touched me. It felt a bit paradoxical to see strays around, while in the nearby yard there were purebred dogs. With so many strays in the area, I wonder why further breeding is still allowed.
Of course, giving them some food is kind, but I believe it would also help to contact shelters or find a way to ensure the animals are cared for. As a visitor, I have unfortunately also noticed strays in difficult situations on the streets, and this left an impression on me.
I just wanted to share that it’s a pity, because you have such a beautiful place with so much to offer, and it would be wonderful if this issue could also be addressed. My comment is not meant as criticism, but rather as a reflection...
