Taverna - Ammoudara Spiridakis — Restaurant in Municipality of Malevizi

As a local, I can confidently say this is one of the best traditional taverns around. My family visits often, and every single time the food is exceptional. All the starters are truly delicious, from the anthogalo (Cretan cream cheese) and tzatziki to ntakos and apaki (smoked pork meat). Everything is made with fresh, home style ingredients you can actually taste.

If you are a meat lover, do not miss the Antikristo, a traditional Cretan way of slow roasting lamb around the fire. It’s incredibly tender and full of flavour, and you won’t find it done this well just anywhere.

If you are a tourist, be sure that cretan hospitality shines here and for the quality and quantity you get, the value for money is amazing.

Taverna situata a 20 minuti circa da Heraklion. Cercata appositamente per evitare luoghi turistici e ristoranti che non rispecchiano le tradizioni dell'isola. Ho prenotato in anticipo, anche se non ce n'era bisogno, al nostro arrivo c'erano diversi tavoli a disposizione. Il locale ha sia tavoli all'aperto nel giardino, sia al chiuso. Ho notato la presenza di una sala giochi per bambini. Abbiamo ordinato due antipastini locali, ovvero delle Dakos e del formaggio fritto. Ottimi entrambi, forse le Dakos erano inzuppate un po' troppo, a me piacciono un po' più dure e meno bagnate. A seguire abbiamo mangiato una grigliata mista per due persone, composta da pancetta di maiale, hamburger, pollo e bistecca di maiale, accompagnato da un'insalata mista. La carne era buona, alla brace, cotta bene e saporita. L'insalata era abbondante, infatti ne abbiamo lasciata un po', e non mi ha colpito più di tanto perché c'era troppo aceto. Da bere abbiamo ordinato acqua e vino locale. Il vino è stata l'unica vera pecca della serata, dopo un sorso abbiamo lasciato tutto la perché aveva un sapore dolciastro, sembrava succo di ciliegia. Anche il colore era sul viola chiaro, non saprei dire il perché, ma era imbevibile. A fine cena, come da tradizione locale, ci è stato offerto il dolce, un po' di anguria e il Raki, classico liquore cretese. Qui per la prima volta ho provato il Raki con limone. Fantastic place and very friendly service! Just came by today, and had the most amazing lunch! We had, saganaki, octopus, squid and lamb - and a outstandig tzatziki ! Every dish was well made, tasty and fresh! As a free dessert we were served with a bounty like cake, som delicious caneloni style sticks we cinnamon-sugar and 3 different varietys of spiritis!
