When we are on holiday, we choose restaurants by "Where would a local go?" Tonight we found this wonderful place. The place is neat and clean (Wifey checked the Women's Restrooms).

The owner speaks Greek (obviously), fluent English and even a few words of German, and fehlt like a nice guy.

There is no menu at the time of this writing - this is good, so everything ist freshly prepared.

We had:

a Greek Salad

Saganaki (Fried Cheese)

Dolmades of Zucchini flowers (!)

Tzatziki

Pork Souvlaki on homemade French Fries

The food was delivered quickly in a sensible order (cold, pre-made first).

The food was truly delicious. We both agreed that we rarely had food that good.

The price was very reasonable (by German standards, and by what we saw in the city of Rethymno, and definitely worth it. I won't tell the price here, in order not top raise improper expectations.

Free parking can bei found at the small memorial park across the street.

Also, the musical taste is very good, but that is probably not a valid criteria.😉

We will definitly go here again!

Im Urlaub suchen wir Restaurants mit der Frage "Wo gehen die Einheimischen hin?" aus.

Heute Abend sind wir in dieser schönen Wirtschaft gelandet. Die Wirtschaft ist sehr sauber und hübsch (Frauchen hat auch die Damentoilette ausprobiert).

Der Besitzer spricht Griechisch (natürlich), fließend Englisch und ein paar Brocken Deutsch - und macht einen sehr netten Eindruck.

Es gibt keine Speisekarte - es gibt das, was die Küche im Moment hergibt (das ist aber kein Nachteil: es ist immer alles frisch).

Wir hatten:

einen Griechischen Salat

Saganaki (gebratener Ziegenkäse)

Dolmades aus Zucchini-Blüten(!)

Tzatziki

Schweinesouvlaki auf selbstgemachten Pommes

Das Essen wurde rasch und in einer sinnvollen Reihenfolge gebracht: erst kalte Vorspeisen, dann warme, dann der Hauptgang.

Das Essen war wirklich sehr lecker. Wir sind beide der Meinung, selten so gut gegessen zu haben.

Das Essen war sehr preiswert - gemessen an deutschen Standards und an dem, was wir in Rethymno gesehen haben, und es war den Preis wirklich wert. Ich will den Preis hier nicht reinschreiben, weil das falsche Erwartungen wecken könnte.

Kostenlos parken kann man an dem kleinen Denkmal-Park schräg gegenüber.

Der Musikgeschmack ist auch sehr gut, aber das ist vielleicht gar kein Kriterium. 😉

🇺🇲 Whenever I am on holiday I go where the locals go and so we did here as well. This nice local restaurant lies on the main road of the village of Armenoi, right on your way to the south/north, not too far away from Réthymno. The owner is from Crete, he is a very nice guy, open-minded and friendly. He fluently speaks English and even a few words of German. The interior of the rustic restaurant is beautiful and decorated with antiques. The restrooms are very clean. We sat on the terrace and had some nice starters (meze): tzatziki, rye-bread, a Greek salad, some dolmades made of zucchini blossoms, a veggie omelett and some grilled goat cheese. As a main dish we had some pork souvlaki with some freshly made French fries. First we got the cold prepared starters, then the warm dishes and this order absolutely made sense. There is no menu and we were just being told what he has made and today he could offer the food mentioned. It was all what we needed and it was delicious! In comparison to town restaurants in Réthymno, f.ex., we did not pay as much. It was a reasonable prize and it was definitely worth it! We'll certainly come back! Free parking is opposite the road, in front of a little monument.

🇩🇪 Immer wenn ich im Ausland bin, versuche ich dort hinzugehen, wo auch die Einheimischen hingehen. In dem kleinen Dorf Armenoi ist dieses kleine, aber sehr schöne Lokal, genau an der Hauptstraße. Das Lokal wird von einem sehr netten Kreter geführt, der fließend Englisch und sogar ein paar Brocken Deutsch spricht. Er ist wirklich sehr sympathisch, aufgeschlossen und nett! Es gibt keine Speisekarte, der Wirt zählt einem aber auf, was er an diesem Tag alles anzubieten hat und das gibt es dann. Heute waren es die Vorspeisen (meze) Tzatziki, griechischer Salat, frisches Roggenbrot, Gemüseomelett, gebratener Ziegenkäse und gefüllte Zucchiniblüten (zubereitet wie Dolmades). Als Hauptgericht konnte er frisches, gegrilltes Schweinesouvlaki mit frischen Pommes anbieten. Es war alles ausgesprochen gut! Der Innenraum des Restaurants hat tolle Steinwände, ist mit Antiquitäten dekoriert und sehr schön, die Toiletten sind sehr sauber. Die Preise sind um einiges günstiger als Restaurants in der Stadt (zB Réthymno), aber wir sind ja auch auf dem Land. Quer gegenüber, bei einem kleinen Monument, kann man kostenlos parken.

Αἰών is a really nice tavern right at the Armenoi main street. During our stay in Armenoi, we elected to eat there twice, once dine-in and once takeout. Both times, the food was superb, tasty and traditional.

When you are seated, the really friendly owner will walk you through the day's menu. There is some room for customisation according to your wishes.

The salads were fresh, and the appetisers and main courses were tasty. Both times, the amount of food served was perfectly measured, and we ended up finishing it all. In some taverns, the offering was just too much, and we felt bad for leaving quite a bit of leftovers.

The prices are very reasonable, just little over 10€ per person in October 2022.
