This restaurant is an absolute gem and one of the most memorable dining experiences we had during our time on the island. After 7 days of intense sightseeing and trying different places, we never encountered anything close to this menu. Unlike the copy-paste offerings of most restaurants on the island, here you will find truly authentic, deeply rooted Cretan cuisine.
The service was outstanding, warm, and attentive, adding to the overall experience. Prices are more than fair – in fact, almost half of what you pay in the coastal towns or more well-known villages, yet the quality here far exceeds them.
The menu itself stands out with a wide variety of unique local starters, especially cheeses, and well-thought-out sets you won’t easily find elsewhere. With just a few familiar exceptions like lamb chops or tzatziki, everything feels fresh and authentic. The food quality is remarkable – it tastes exactly like the real, traditional Cretan meals that local grandmothers would prepare for their families.
The atmosphere is also unforgettable: the outdoor seating area is beautifully covered by grapevines with heavy bunches of grapes hanging above, creating a natural and welcoming canopy. It adds so much charm to the dining experience.
If you want to taste real Cretan food in a truly authentic setting, this place is a must. It’s absolutely worth investing a little extra travel time to get there – the reward is...
Read moreI spent some time researching restaurants in Crete. “Goules” (named after a pirate that settled in the tiny hamlet) is a charming authentic Greek tavern. It is hosted and owned by Kostas. He is passionate about his tavern and proud of the Cretan food heritage. I booked for 2 and we enjoyed a feast of local delights. I enjoyed the local wine - in fact it was exceptional. The prices are super fair and the service is charming. Next time we get to Crete I’ll be sure to stay close by - his Cretan gastronomy was some of the very best Greek food I have ever had. Kostas is a very lovable character and I was so pleased to have met him. We went back to the tavern with the whole family on our last night! What to eat - everything of course… however my favourites were the local CHEESE selections, CHIRINO WITH XYNOCHONDRO Pork served with sour cracked wheat, and flavoured with tomato. Rich in protein & energy, the old-timers used to make this dish as a soup. ASKORDOULAKI (WILD BULBS) A gift of the Cretan land... Scalded in boiling water to make edible. Served in olive oil and vinegar. If your there book as soon as possible if not...

We’ve been coming to Crete for nearly a decade, and Goules Taverna remains our number-one stop every single time. The moment you walk in, you feel like you’re being welcomed home.
The food is everything you hope for in authentic Cretan cuisine: fresh, vibrant, and full of love. From the perfectly grilled meats to the seasonal vegetables and fragrant herbs, every dish tastes as if it came straight from the family’s garden. Portions are generous without ever sacrificing quality.
What truly sets Goules apart, though, is the people. The family behind the taverna radiates genuine warmth and hospitality. They remember faces and stories, making each visit feel personal and special. Even after all these years, they keep the atmosphere lively and the service heartfelt.
Whether it’s your first time on Crete or your tenth visit, Goules Taverna is a place you simply shouldn’t miss. It’s not just a meal—it’s the essence of Crete served at the table. Highly recommended, always.
Thank you kosta and your Family for the good times.
Kind regards...
