Taverna Pirgos — Restaurant in Municipality of Rethymnon

Delicious and beautiful. We had a bountiful feast of many flavors. We ordered the stuffed vine leaves that came warmed and tossed in a tomato sauce… tangy tzatziki with fresh baked pita that just the right amount of crunch, feta stuffed and roasted green peppers that tasted fresh picked, chicken avocado salad with a mild mustard yogurt dressing that was divine, and for the grand finale we ordered the Mixed Grill. A heaping pile of lamb/pork chops, chicken, rabbit, and burger grilled to perfection. We switched out the fried potatoes for grilled veggies and they were surprisingly scrumptious. Our server was very kind and accommodating. The taverna was packed with a bustling family atmosphere for sunset but still had many tables available. After the four of us had devoured all we could we packed up half the feast to take with us for yet another dinner covered! We were then presented with two plates of orange cake with vanilla ice cream. Our children were ecstatic and we were thankful for the kids area outside for them to jump their dessert away. The bill was only $61 euros and I’d have happily paid double that for the experience. If you are taking the mountain pass to the south of Crete from Rethmyno it is an absolute must see. Absolutely beautiful place with a very friendly owner who speaks English very well. He’s welcoming and there’s a fantastic kids area too! The views are gorgeous and the whole place has a lovely, welcoming vibe. We found it by chance and we’re so glad that we did. They have the sweetest freshly squeezed OJ and lovely coffee. They also serve local delicacies which are favoured by all. The owner also lives here and told me it’s very popular with the locals more than tourists. This makes me want to come back again as I don’t like touristy places. It’s really lovely and well worth a stop for a meal or a drink if you’ve had a long drive. The food there deserves 5 stars but the service was horrible. The owner and the daughter were sweet but the waitress didn’t even look at my table. She served tables with different attitude - to tables with more people or local people, she was fast. But she even didn’t look at my table at all. I noticed that she served the desert to the table that came one hour later than I did already and had to ask her to bring mine. But she still went inside to bring desert to other tables. I sat outside more than two hours waiting for the food and it was very cold(they don’t have tables available inside) I am not sure she has bias either to Asian or to a single guest.
