Piperia — Restaurant in Municipality of Sitia

We were recommended this place for the "music night". Honestly the village looks almost abandoned and in ruins, definitely not worth visiting. There's not even a decent view on the valley. We went purposely for the music night, with a local folkloristic group playing. When booking nobody advised us that the menu was a set menu with a fixed price. Nobody even adviced us in advance on the kind of food being served. So if you have any food intolerance/preference you are in serious trouble. We took seats at 20.40. Appetizers (already prepared) were served only around 21-21.10 even with the venue still half empty. At 22.40, 2 entire hours after our seating we were still waiting for the main course even after several claims. Situation was completely out of control, the 2 waiters (for a 120-150 people audience) kept repeating "vàit vàit" even after pointing out that we've been waiting for more than an hour. No care was given at all since other tables were served main courses right in front of us even if they were seated 30 minutes after us. The venue was completely understaffed, extremely poorly managed, no minimal knowledge from the staff about the products served like whether if pasteurized or not. Honestly some of the appetizers were even good and the music show was quite interesting, but definitely not worth the time/price/distance/overall experience. We left at 22.45. We were exhausted. We agreed to pay half the price, 20€ per person, instead of 40€, leaving with no main course or dessert served, which presumedly wouldn't be served before 00.30. If we would have been advised in advance about the timing, the price and the set menu (with no possibilities of any adjustments for food intolerances) we could have taken our decisions and evaluated if it was worth the journey. Being trapped in a situation where there's no control nor care for the customer is not what I'm Iooking for when I'm in vacation and paying a price that was not agreed and is above the market standard (they were serving a standard Cretan dinner, that you can pay anywhere around 20 € per person) Extremely...

We had dinner at this place. The food was average, but can be found much better at other restaurants around the area.

The reason for the two stars is the atmosphere created by the service or rather the owner/head chef of the place.

The mood was super hectic and not friendly. It took the staff 20 minutes to come to us when we arrived. In these COVID times we expect the staff to wear face masks which they do in other restaurants. This was not the case here.

The most unacceptable thing about this restaurant is the chef’s/owners’ behavior towards his staff. The door to the kitchen was open and the way that the chef/owner was treating his staff made us almost leave. Several times we experienced that the chef/owner had outbursts of anger towards the employees in a way that is just not acceptable where we come from. We felt it was very humiliating for the staff! And when we had to pay, the owner/chef hit in anger the credit card machine on our table several times to make it work, because it had connection problems.

The place itself was pretty ok, old table old chairs nice view. The staff took 20minutes to finally come meanwhile we asked for menu 2 times. When you come there they serve you bread and water which you dont order they just do it and charge you 5euros for that only? Ok i get it the place doesnt get alot ppl coming but cmon two of us didnt even touch the bread why they should pay aswell? Next thing the food quality, jesus where should i start friend asked for omlette with potatoes, he received omlette with tomatoes (he hates them), the homemade pasta was undercooked, grilled lamb was grilled from another day and just warmed up in warm water then served on top french fries (the fries got soaky wet from water and fat coming out the meat), i got mousaka as we know its traditional food which they do in special plate where they cook it ( i got it microvawed on normal plate, it was cold and tasteless when i got it).
