Sitting in the transfer bus on the way to Petra, I saw this restaurant clinging to the edge of one of the alpine hairpins. It looked as though it would have amazing views so a few days into our holiday I found it on Google maps. I was easily able to make a booking with Dmitris by messenger via their Facebook page. It is a little way out of town and we haven’t hired a car so decided to take a taxi. When I asked our hotel to book me a taxi, he was quite taken aback! How did you learn of this restaurant he asked? It isn’t one most tourists visit. They have very good meat! He explained that the restaurant was locally owned, frequented by locals and remained open all year, unlike most of the town restaurants. Taxi booked we arrived there about 7:30. On the way the taxi driver unprompted said “They have very good meat” so I took that as another recommendation!
We were welcomed by Dmitris who spoke excellent English and we had a front table facing over the view down to Petra and beyond. It is a wonderful view. Dmitris was very helpful, finding me a “good stuff” ouzo to try and helping my vegan wife navigate through the side dishes. I’m always slightly anxious that there won’t be any vegan options when we visit a meat based restaurant but Angela was happy with the dishes she had. I was happy too! A starter of baked feta with green peppers and herbs was zingy, salty and sharp and a great foil to my ouzo. My grilled lamb delivered everything I hoped. It was sweet, juicy and herby. Cut differently to British style chops, I was happy nibbling away at the bones to get the last nuggets of juicy loveliness out! Sitting there with the sun setting, it was absolutely beautiful. When I realised that we had another hour or so before our booked return taxi, I ordered us a bottle of red wine and the local sausages! To be fair, Dmitris offered me a half portion, and I should have listened as the full portion I ordered was far more than I needed!
Overall it was a great evening, the views are stunning, Dimitris is welcoming and helpful and the food is genuine local food. It may take a little trip to get there but it has been one of the highlights of our holiday. I highly recommend a visit.
A taxi cost us €23 for the return journey and I didn’t begrudge that at all. If going there by taxi, book your return trip at the same time.
Edit: I left my hat behind but it was waiting at my hotel reception for me this morning! Thank...
Read moreThis place alone can be really the reason to visit the island. Magnificent food, every plate on our table was top quality. I would come back to the island just to have dinner here once more. We ordered sheep, few mezes and we tasted three different wines. All was perfect. As vegan options they have fava , stuffed wine leaves (sarma/dolma), salads with nice olive oil and some more. Owner is a really nice person. They even offered us some brownies at the end of the night. Portions are really good and sufficient for all foods. I thanked them after the dinner. You know we have passed few days in the islan and tried around 6-7 restaurants. This place is the best between them. İn Molyvos area there are some pizzerias or restaurants that are over changing tourists with not very special food. But O Gavrilos is not one of those. I think it's one of the best in all Greek islands. I've visited before many Greek islands and Thessaloniki etc. This place is my number one Greek restaurant so far. Thank you very much, I hope you continue with this quality and this place needs a 3 Michelin Stars. Great view by the hill. Prices are really good as it should be.Don't forget to make a reservation before one...
Read moreWe waited 20 minutes to get a table. The place is packed with locals, enjoying their evening meal (we arrived at 21.30). Don't worry it's definitely worth the wait.
It's easier to make a reservation, than waiting for 20 minutes 😂.
The restaurant is located about 6 km from Petra. The view is fantastic, well if you come at night, like we did - not so much 🙂. Jokes aside. We really enjoyed the patio and the mountain breeze (and the view).
The atmosphere feels authentic, not that I know much about Greek atmosphere.
What I can say, is that during all my visits to Greek restaurants (in Greece and abroad), this is one of the best (and cheapest).
As you might have guessed, I started with the greek salad and "Tirokafteri" a homemade dip with yoghurt, feta and mild spicy peppers, lamb and grilled pork neck steak.
The pork and lamb was perfectly grilled and really juicy. So tasty.
It was my first time trying Tirokafteri, and now I'm addicted. Try it!
Thank you so much for having us (and the dessert). We had a fantastic time and like Schwarzenegger said - I'll be back 😃.
A BIG...
