I went here here for a coffee tour in August. I payed 200Q at a small agency in town for a 2 hour tour and transportation back and forth. Finca Filadelfia is a medium sized coffee plantation, owned by a foreigner, that produces coffe under the brand R.Dalton which by the time of this writing is mainly bought by Japan and Starbucks. The area was beautiful and the guide had a lot of knowledge about the process. He was a little bit full of himself and liked to ask trick questions just to prove that he knows more than you. About half of the tour showed how they process the beans using different machines once they have been handpicked. Since harvest season is between November and April the factory was completely empty. Hence the factory-part of the tour was like walking in a museum and looking at machines, needless to say it was quite boring.
One sad but interesting fact that I learned on the tour is that Finca Filadelfia hires locals to pick the berries during the harvest. The workers get payed by the weight of the berries that they pick and not by the hour. The tour guide proudly explained that a common days sallery for this heavy and hard 8 hour labor is somewhere around 80Q which is close to the minimum wage in Guatemala. It was obvious that Finca Filadelfia had no interest in giving their workers a better salary.
If you're planning to go on the tour I recommend that you do it during the harvest season on a smaller fairtrade plantation that's owned by...
Read moreOne of the worthy places to visit while in Antigua, Guatemala. We took a tour by paying $15 per person. The company drove us on a truck with open air seats. we learned so much about coffee growing and making.
Apparently, Guatemala is one of the best coffee growers in the world. Many Asian and European customers come here to purchase their coffee beans every year. We learned that coffee tree was introduced to the region from Ethiopia. The best coffee bean specie is the Arabica.
After the tour we bought a few bags of Arabica coffee to bring home. My kids love them.
One word of caution is that, it’s hard to get a tax or Uber from this location. It took us almost 45 minutes...
Read moreWe had breakfast here and did the tour with Sergio. The food was delicious, fast, and well priced. The breakfast came with coffee and oatmeal!
The tour was a real highlight. Even though it was in Spanish, Sergio accommodated us English speakers by speaking slowly, using some English and miming out things. It was really informative and fun. He is hilarious and takes great photos. We asked so many questions and he patiently answered them with thoughtful answers. It was interactive too - we got to pick our own coffee fruit and taste it raw and had a guided tasting of a shot of espresso or americano included. Sergio...
